Life is a beautiful challenge. We all face adversity in life, whether this manifests as mental or physical illness, trauma, or difficulty coping with day to day experiences. Therapy is not just about treatment or addressing mental illness, it is a tool that we can all use to develop a better understanding of ourselves and our individual lived experience, and to reconnect with the joy in our lives. Therapy can help us identify thinking and behaviour patterns, address past and present traumas, cope with everyday fears and anxieties, and learn ways to better relate to and understand ourselves, our environments, and other people.

Through my own life experiences, I know that life can throw certain life changing events at us, such as bereavement, loss, divorce or parenting and relationship issues.
I understand how difficult it can be to express emotions and fears and this can be particularly so for younger people. I have developed different techniques to help overcome this and have an affinity for, and experience of, working with teenagers and young adults. However, I have a wide range of experience and enjoy working with people of all ages.

I have many years experience of counselling clients on a one-to-one basis, specialising in bereavement, anxiety, depression, trauma and domestic abuse.
I am well aware that at times life can be difficult; you may feel anxious, over-whelmed, worried or just not right. Or you may feel that your past experiences are having an impact on how you deal with things in your life today. Talking with me could help you in a different way than talking to a friend of family member and this is primarily because you can be honest with me without me judging you.  I'm here to listen to you and to support you in working things out for yourself. My approach is open, honest and down-to-earth and I am a firm believer in the counselling process and the good that it can do.

I have spent the last eight years working with individuals and groups struggling with relationships, bereavement and trauma.
Welcome, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them" Maya Angelou. Are you thinking past experiences are impacting on your life now, your relationships, family, or your work, and feeling stuck. Perhaps there is trauma in the past: a childhood experience when no-one was there to understand, a single terrifying incident, bullying, boarding school, or have/are experiencing an abusive relationship. Would you like to understand and find resolution and hope to face the future with confidence and resilience and improve your relationships.

My journey started many years ago as a bereavement counsellor, I also jointly facilitated a loss & bereavement group at a major mental health facility in London.
Through therapy you can find out things about yourself that will help you understand what is going on for you and help to develop your own understanding and gradually learn more about your innermost parts and lead the way to greater acceptance of yourself. This is awareness and will help you feel more empowered to choose to do things differently. I believe this work is about being true to yourself rather than being who you think you 'should' be and to reclaim those parts of you that have been denied. It is both challenging and rewarding work leading to emotional healing and growth.

I work in an integrative way, with a person centred approach, with your mind, body, and spirit. I have a Diploma in Humanistic counselling and have trained with the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, which aids me in working with the body. I include the body in therapy as both a source of information and a target for intervention, growth and healing.

I work with adults experiencing a wide range of life issues, such as anxiety, depression, bereavement, trauma and relationships issues.
Hi, I’m Emma and I understand life can be challenging, confusing, overwhelming, stressful and often very difficult at times. Sometimes life can just get on top of us, and sometimes something happens to trigger us. Either way, you don’t have to manage this on your own. I understand that coping with the pressures of daily life alongside your own internal struggles can be difficult. I can help you to work through your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and emotions; to help you make sense of your world. I use an integrative approach, I use a range of methods to assist me in my practice, selecting those which are best suited for you.

I work with loss, eg
Therapy is personal journey, unique to you and directed by what you want to achieve; I trained in Relational Transactional Analysis and use this modality to support my clients' growth in self awareness and understanding of the unconscious patterns that have been driving their behaviour. Many clients can't fully articulate what they want from therapy, only that they want things to be different, this is normal, and part of the process of therapy is working with you to discover what you want. On the way we aim to discover what blocks you from achieving your goals and support you in finding new paths to reach your goal.

Don't despair, help is at hand" I have been an integrative therapist for over ten years and lecture at Inter- Psyche, Kent and Medway NHS Trust. I work with children and adults, in couples or individually. I utilise an array of counselling approaches as I believe not one method is superior to another and that we are all unique individuals.I have helped my clients understand themselves better, be it overcoming depression, loss, anxiety or improving their personal relationships. What to expect: Counselling is about building a trusting relationship. To help you feel safe and secure I provide a boundaried, respectful, confidential and non-discriminative alliance. At the end of our first session I always ask “do you feel you can work with me”, as it is important that you feel comfortable and safe. Due to the busyness of modern day life and people being constantly on the move, I am able to accommodate this by offering skype or telephone sessions. Next step Seeking help is often the hardest part yet I would like to commend you on your courage for taking this first step. Get in touch so we can start this journey together.

I am experienced in dealing with anxiety and depression, which may be a product of unresolved issues in the past, or triggered by more recent experiences such as bereavement, change of career or relationship breakdown.
Are you feeling angry, anxious, overwhelmed or suffering from low mood? Has something recently happened to you that you need to talk about with someone who won’t judge but who can help you make sense of things? Perhaps you’ve had a traumatic or difficult experience that you need to talk over? Maybe you wake up each day feeling unfulfilled and have a sense that there must be more to life than this? It may be that you are experiencing something new, such as parenthood, which is bringing up uncomfortable memories of your past? Whatever the presenting concern, I'm here to help.

Maybe you have experienced bereavement and are struggling with your emotions and find that people just tell you to pull yourself together.
Anxiety is real and can have a big impact on your everyday life. I have worked with many people with anxiety, depression, bereavement and trauma related to sports injuries. When your life changes over night due to an injury or loss, the impact on you can be hard to cope with. We can work together to help you process what is going on for you.

It could be anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, grief, or just a sense that you do not feel good enough no matter how hard you try.
I am a person-centred counsellor and my approach is rooted in the belief that you are the expert of 'you' and trust that the therapeutic relationship we build together will enable you to unlock your innate wisdom and inner resources for change. I have considerable experience working with grief and loss, however I work with clients for a wide range of issues.

Bereavement Counsellors

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
