Life is a beautiful challenge. We all face adversity in life, whether this manifests as mental or physical illness, trauma, or difficulty coping with day to day experiences. Therapy is not just about treatment or addressing mental illness, it is a tool that we can all use to develop a better understanding of ourselves and our individual lived experience, and to reconnect with the joy in our lives. Therapy can help us identify thinking and behaviour patterns, address past and present traumas, cope with everyday fears and anxieties, and learn ways to better relate to and understand ourselves, our environments, and other people.

Are you a parent worrying about your child or teenager's mental health?
I feel that traditional 'talk' therapy can be quite intimidating for some young people, so where appropriate, l offer a range of creative interventions such as crafts, activities and games to help the young person relax and start to explore their worries.

Perhaps you’re a teenager or young adult, who experiences physical symptoms of anxiety (such as stomach aches or racing heart), which make you want to avoid certain situations.
You’re not alone, anxiety is one of the most common mental wellbeing challenges. It’s actually encountered by a high percentage of people at some point in their lives. I therefore feel naturally empathic when people approach me and share their story and find genuine joy in supporting you to develop the resilience to flourish and achieve your full potential.

I am a Senior Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with 23 years of experience in CAMHS (NHS).
Attention is drawn on how past and current experiences have an impact on our emotional world, functioning and patterns of relating to others. This understanding supports us to build the capacity to regulate our feelings, embrace all aspects of ourselves and grow our resilience. Research has shown that psychotherapy continues to be helpful after therapy ends.

I am easy to talk to and offer an open space to explore what's currently going on for you, or your teen.
Are social situations leaving you drained or unfulfilled? Maybe you can't speak to friends and family about how disconnected you're feeling and they aren't understanding you. Do you want to be more open, assertive and have a greater sense of purpose in life? Need time for yourself? A space to air confusing or painful thoughts and experiences that build up over the weeks. Sometimes we need to reflect and vent about our relationships with a warm, neutral professional.

I am a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist who recently retired from the NHS, after over 30 years of dedicated work in Children and families mental health.
Young children communicate their feelings through play, and the way they relate to adults. Understanding their communication and acknowledging their feelings is a way of making sense of how this might affect their wellbeing and specific difficulties. With adolescents and parents talking about their struggles will give an opportunity to feel understood.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
