it's fair to say that I have had my own personal challenges in life, grew up the youngest of 4, dragged up on a council estate, joined the Army as a means to escape, during my ten years in a front line infantry battalion I served in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and was one of the Desert Rats that liberated Iraq in 2003. Upon leaving the forces I struggled with the transition back to civilian life, lost all my friends and family (due to my behavior), became isolated, alone, suicidal, unemployed, divorced, street homeless, bankrupt and more. It's going through all these challenges that has made me into the person I am today.

I’ve been described as a kind, gentle and highly empathic man with a very calm and soothing energy. I imagine that you may think that what you or your family member might be bringing into sessions with me may feel overwhelming, intolerable or even embarrassing but I can assure you that I'll remain alongside with no judgement. I have wide, strong arms which can hold even the biggest trouble. Whatever the issues, I can work with you to develop a course of action in either short-term focussed or open-ended longer work, whichever suits you best.

How does behaviour affect yourself and others and potentially impact on your relationships? Are you carrying an issue, worry or fear which is now influencing yourself and/or others in an unhelpful way which you would like to change or improve? Are things currently ok but could be better, or are you fearful of a situation reaching crisis point if it is not addressed soon? If you can relate to questions like these then perhaps therapeutic intervention is the next step for you to consider.

Struggling to cope with negative emotions can feel very isolating and, by the nature of some problems, guilt and shame can make us feel stigmatised and prevent us reaching out for support even when its not our fault. People come to counselling for all kinds of reasons from childhood trauma to life events as adults such as divorce, bereavement and stress and what they all have in common is a desire to feel better and begin to enjoy life. Some people find they use alcohol or drugs in an attempt to cope with their feelings but inventively this creates more problems.

I use a variety of creative techniques to subtly explore and understand what is going on for the child/ teen , and then work together to alleviate the problem.
At times, we can feel overwhelmed by the events and demands facing us in everyday life, or we might struggle to move on from what has happened to us in our past. Psychotherapeutic Counselling can help to unravel the patterns we are caught in and I believe that talking through, can help us to untangle and understand the things that might be holding us back in order for us to find new ways of coping and moving forwards in life.

I specialise in working with individuals who have difficulties in managing their emotions and therefore struggle with things like relationships, drinking, substance use, self harming and other impulsive behaviour. You don't need a formal diagnosis to work with me, but I do have a speciality of working with people with personality disorders. I also have lots of experience of working with people who have had traumatic histories and are struggling to manage as a result. This might mean they are depressed, anxious or just finding trusting people hard. As well as these specialities, I also work with all major mental health issues

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
