This way of working can be particularly helpful if anxiety, stress or trauma show up physically through tension, fatigue, pain or shutdown.
I work in a gentle, integrative way, bringing together psychotherapy and somatic awareness. This can include inner child and parts work, exploring how protective responses developed and how earlier experiences may still be influencing how you feel in your body today. Sessions are paced carefully, supporting regulation, clarity and reconnection.

In many ways mental health issues are more serious than physical illness.
Psychotherapy and Life Coaching do have some things in common, but they are different in their emphasis and the methods they use. Psychotherapy; I will help you understand and resolve difficult issues that are getting in the way of feeling good and functioning in your daily life. Life Coaching; will help you have more joy and satisfaction in your life.

I have 25 years experience of working with people who have depression, anxiety disorders and/or chronic painful conditions. I find that people are attracted to CBT and ACT because they are looking for slightly more structured sessions and they want to learn tools and techniques to help them achieve their goals.

If you want to change your situation on the outside, it’s good to start by looking at what you can change on the inside. Perhaps you have serious difficulties finding peace and joy in your life. Your sense of well-being, physically and mentally, may be reduced or destroyed. You might find yourself sliding into unhealthy or even self-destructive behaviours. Your persistent self-doubt leads to anxiety and depression, causing relationship problems and anger issues. You have a feeling that you do not quite know who you are.  Or perhaps you just know “something is not quite right in my life” but you can’t pinpoint what it is.

You may feel like your friends are moving on with their lives, while you remain stuck. You know you want things to change, but you keep putting it off until tomorrow. Then you wake in the night, convinced that life is passing you by. The more time passes, the more you feel it’s your fault. You tell yourself it “should” be easy to make changes. You call yourself “lazy", or "not good enough". This self-critical way of thinking saps your energy, making it even harder to take steps towards change. I work with adults who feel caught between the part of themselves that wants to make changes and the part that feels stuck.

You may feel overwhelmed, disconnected, on edge, or stuck in patterns that don't make sense. You might experience anxiety, dissociation, flashbacks, emotional swings, self-harm urges, disordered eating or difficulties in relationships. You want relief, stability, and to feel like yourself again - not just cope, but truly heal. You may be tired of surviving and want life to feel calmer, safer and more meaningful.

Chronic Pain Counsellors
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
