I am experienced in working with clients who are struggling with: Depression, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, childhood issues and stress in the workplace
I believe that the therapist and client come together as a team to work through issues that may stand in the way of you reaching your potential. Through my training, I have mainly used Transactional Analysis, but also have some experience working in a solution-focussed way and like to work integratively as each person is an individual who may like to work in a different way. I work with people on a range of issues, but find that I work with people with anxiety or depression most commonly, and pride myself on working hard to make people feel at ease.

It's just a brew and a chat where we chew the fat and explore the therapeutic relationship.
I'm Stu, the Lead Therapist and Founder SJR Therapy. I’m passionate about mental health and firmly believe that counselling can change a persons life. I have a wealth of experience in lots of different areas - I worked in education for a number of years, as a counsellor and mentor to teaching staff and students and worked in the financial service industry before changing careers to counselling and psychotherapy. Having struggled with poor mental health myself and receiving therapy as a result, I can totally understand the nerves and anxiety that you may have before you embark on your therapeutic journey but you have nothing to fear.

Newid pronounced "Nowed" is Welsh for change. I chose this name not only to reflect my heritage but also to reflect that change is the only constant in life. We all travel with it, yet all our experiences can be profoundly different. I believe that counselling is a collaborative process in which we work together on what you want to change or explore in a safe non-judgemental environment. I offer an integrative approach where we work side-by-side to understand your past and help you discover new ways of coping and moving forward. I recognise that courage is not fearless and making the 1st step can be challenging in it's self.

I do have a lot of experience working with trauma, particularly within relationships, from childhood and in the workplace.
You may know exactly what you want to work through or just feel you're not the person you want to be. Trauma responses, OCD, a phobia or social anxiety might be getting the better of you, or you may have no one to talk to in confidence. How we each feel is unique and experienced individually. I have a personalised approach that is caring, sensitive and you can explore thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged whatever is in your life now or in the past. Together we can manage difficult times in your life, make sense of challenges, understand patterns and find ways to create meaningful positive change.

Perhaps you are in a relationship that once felt like home and now feels like a negotiation, 2 capable people who somehow cannot reach each other anymore.
I work bilingually, in English and French, using Gottman-method couples therapy and neuroqueer-affirming individual work. Sessions are not about fixing you. They are about finding you. We move at your pace, in a safe space with everything you bring until the life you stopped allowing yourself to want starts to feel genuinely possible.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
