Life is overwhelming at times and it's just good to talk about what's going on. I like to work with you to find your own answers, to understand what is going on for you. We don't always know what we are thinking or feeling until we say it out loud. In order to do that you need to be able to trust who you are talking to. Nobody likes feeling judged or being told what to do!

Hi I'm Ally, if you are looking for a therapist and don't know where to start, it might be worth sending an email and meeting a few, the best way to get a sense of whether you are going to be able to work with a therapist would be to meet them and see how you feel. I am happy to offer a free consultation to help you explore what you would like to get out of therapy and ask any questions. I'm an accredited psychotherapist and mental health nurse with over a decade of experience. if you are ready, I Iook forward to hearing from you.

I have lots of experience working with relationship issues, self-esteem issues, anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, sexual abuse and work related issues. For many people who come to see me, they are looking for a supportive space during times of overwhelm, or want to work through areas of life which feel challenging. For some, the goal may be simply feeling better, for others we might work towards a more specific goal. Usually sessions will be held on a weekly basis during the same time slot each week. I integrate a range of different psychotherapeutic approaches subject to your needs.

I have worked with many clients who have presented with a variety of difficulties such as relationship issues, family difficulties, low self-esteem, chronic health issues, stress, anger, depression, anxiety, abuse, bereavement, identity issues, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. We have been able to work through these together. By listening, empathising, discussing coping strategies and being inquisitive, many of my clients have made sense of what was going on for them. It is always an honour to watch my clients heal and learn. It's never too late!

I have lots of experience working with relationship issues, anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, abuse and work related problems. During our first meet we will discuss and agree how we can best work together, the frequency and duration of the therapy and desired outcome, whether that's just wanting to feel better in some way, or something more targeted. This will then form a kind of contract which we will base the work on whilst reviewing it periodically. Usually sessions will be held on a weekly basis during the same time slot each week. I integrate a range of different psychotherapeutic approaches subject to your needs.

Are you feeling anxious, depressed, stressed, insecure, or overwhelmed by your emotions? Or are you looking for someone who will listen and be non judgemental and to whom you can talk in confidence about issues that are bothering you that would be difficult to share with friends or family members? Your feelings may be related to a bereavement or loss, the effects of abuse, relationship issues, or a major life change or may be related to something unresolved from the past. You may also be seeking support in setting goals and moving on in a positive way. These (and others) are areas in which I am well experienced.

Sometimes, we can feel a little stuck, unfocussed, confused or not like our usual self. Ask yourself the following questions: Do you ever wish you felt like your old self again? Maybe you feel your emotions are taking over, and you can’t control them. Do past events keep popping up in the present, like roadblocks stopping you moving forward. Maybe you want to make peace with a feeling, emotion, or memory for once and for all. Do you wish you had a plan that would work for you, at your pace and suited to your unique situation? Perhaps you’ve never been listened to before in a place where you feel heard and without judgement?

Counselling can be the first step toward better self care and prioritising your own needs. It can help with understanding the choices you have in life. It can be used to work on issues such as anxiety, depression or anger. It can be helpful to look at the past and understand how it impacts the present. Re-framing this can lead to a better understanding and maybe less self blame or shame. We can carry burdens which aren't ours to carry and counselling can be a safe place to explore this. It can help for the management of difficult relationships in our lives.

Maybe the reason you are here today is because you are experiencing feelings that you would rather not continue to carry alone. My practice is called ‘Accanto’ and I have built my service around this name, which translated means ‘next to or beside,’ and quite simply that is exactly where I will be for you. I do have an A-Z of what I cover but actually this is about YOU feeling that you can bring anything you need into the space that I offer. Counselling is initially about feeling better about all the different parts of yourself, learning to love your whole self so that you can then invite love and acceptance from others.

Welcome. I offer a compassionate, heart-centred approach to existential crises. Our search for meaning and purpose, who we really are and why we are here often comes under the guise of other problems or illness. We may experience depression, anxiety, grief about our planet, shame, deep loneliness, identity concerns, suicidal feelings or quest for soul and and a spiritual path. During therapy, I can help you develop self-compassion and inner strength, so you can face difficulties while clarity and self-knowledge grow, leaving behind what is not supporting you and moving on to live your authentic self, your truth and your dreams.

How can I find a therapist in Newton Abbot?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
