Hello, I’m Jasmer Chauhan, an integrative psychotherapist. I understand that searching for the right therapist can feel overwhelming, and I value the courage it takes to reach out. I offer a free initial consultation so we can talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, your hopes for the process, and how I work. Most importantly, it gives you the chance to see if I feel like the right fit for you. My aim is to provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where you can explore your experiences and move toward clarity, resilience, and growth.

As a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist specialising in CAMHS, neurodevelopmental conditions, and eating disorders, I understand how exhausting it is to battle overwhelming emotions and self-critical thoughts every day. Perhaps anxiety steals your peace, or you're trapped in patterns that leave you feeling stuck and alone. Mental health struggles can drain the joy from life, making even simple moments feel impossible. You deserve to feel calmer, more confident, and in control. Through CBT and evidence-based approaches, I'll help you understand the thinking patterns driving your emotions and break the cycles keeping you stuck.

At YSF our counsellors and psychotherapists work with children and young people, alongside parents and carers who are concerned about their child’s emotional wellbeing. Many families come to us after weeks or months of carrying worry on their own, noticing changes in mood, behaviour, confidence, friendships, or school attendance, and feeling unsure how best to help. All of our counsellors hold specific qualifications in working with Children and Young People (CYP), ensuring our work is developmentally informed, emotionally safe, and responsive to each child’s stage and needs.

Therapy means different things to different people. For some, it's about changing a particular behaviour or learning to better manage emotions. For others, it's a space to unpack experiences and gain deeper understanding. Sometimes it's all of these—or something else entirely. My strength lies in helping clients explore, reflect and make sense of their inner world. I aim to create a space that’s safe, accepting, and non-directive, so we can work together to understand why you feel, think, or behave the way you do. Through insight, we can uncover new ways of relating to yourself and others, helping you move toward the life you want.

I offer individual and couples counselling in Harpenden and surrounding areas using the psychodynamic approach, which is a talking therapy.
Problems are personal, bereavement, depression, stress, relationship breakdowns and anxiety can all feel unbearable and isolating. The reasons for seeking counselling or psychotherapy are as unique and varied as we are. Sometimes we have an idea of what is annoying or upsetting us. Sometimes we struggle to understand issues that darken our days. We might enter a cycle of blame or self-loathing in which we get lost, finding it difficult to move forwards in our lives.

Do you feel emotionally drained, lost, or disconnected from yourself? Or maybe everything is going right in your life, but you feel something is missing? I can help you understand what’s really going on beneath the surface and find a way forward. With experience working in addiction and recovery, I have developed a deeper understanding of how coping behaviours, emotional pain, and past experiences can shape the way we think, feel, and relate to others. Whether or not addiction is part of your story, these patterns can show up in many different ways, and together we can begin to make sense of them.

Marriage Counselling
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
