At times, we can all experience difficult thoughts and feelings or a sense of being “stuck”: counselling can help us work through these, develop a better relationship with ourselves and those around us, and gain clarity and insight into the issues that are causing us problems. I believe that we all possess the resources to work through our problems, but at times these can become hidden and feel out of reach. My aim is to help you identify what you need and re-connect with your own resources.

I work with adults who may be feeling anxious, low in mood or confidence, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves.
Perhaps it’s hard to say no, to prioritise yourself, or to resist coping strategies that no longer help. I start by getting to know you and offering a steady, reliable presence. As trust builds, I may reflect patterns, helping you see yourself with fresh eyes. At times, this can include gentle challenge, always with care and at a pace that works for you.

I will walk alongside you as you make your way through the challenges that life throws at you. To allow you space to talk and to assist you in discovering what will help you. We cannot avoid the difficulties life puts in front of us, but we can build our own resilience and self-confidence to better face those tough times. Counselling is a collaborative process firmly rooted in your needs and at your direction. I truly believe that every individual holds the solution to their own puzzle and I will help you find or create these solutions. We can explore your emotions together but also implement practical solutions for your wellbeing.

As a BABCP accredited CBT Therapist I have worked in various NHS and private settings: Anxiety, Depression, Panic, OCD, PTSD, Trauma, Perfectionism, Worry and Low Self Esteem are difficulties I regularly work with.
I incorporate third wave approaches such as Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, Distress tolerance and Narrative Therapy into my work at Cambridge CBT. These approaches are particularly effective in working with painful emotions and processes such as guilt, shame, rumination, anger and an intolerance of uncertainty.

I have helped many people cope with stress, overcome anxiety, beat depression and reduce their drinking before it took over their lives completely.
Right now you might find it almost impossible to believe life will work out for the best. Sometimes change just comes along but most of the time it's up to us to get started. That's tough at the best of times. Maybe staying as you are just seems easier or, perhaps, you've now reached a point where you want to change but don't know how to go about it. Starting out can seem daunting, a risk even. That's where therapy comes in.

I work both in-person and online where we can safely explore any issues that you may have in confidence. I strongly believe that everyone can benefit from counselling, provided they have a good connection with their counsellor. That is why the relationship is at the heart of my work. I work with a wide range of people, I am passionate about working with those who identify as LGBTQ+ and those who may be questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Being queer myself, I have a deep understanding of the different struggles and discrimination we face day to day. I am also kink, poly/open relationship friendly.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
