Hi there. My name is Joe, and I’m a Psychological Therapist based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After suffering through years of anxiety and depression throughout my teens and early twenties, I was able to work through these issues and make a full recovery. I knew then that if I could recover, I could help other people do the same. Following my recovery, I went on to gain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Counselling from The University of Sunderland and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (IAPT) from Teesside University. I am an accredited member of The British Association for Cognitive & Behavioural Psychotherapies.

Many of my clients are struggling with anxiety, trauma, low mood, or emotional overwhelm. Some are processing past abuse or loss, while others feel stuck or disconnected and want to understand themselves better. You may be seeking relief, clarity, or a calmer mind. Whether you have clear goals or just need someone to talk to, I offer a supportive, non-judgemental space where we can work at your pace. I primarily work with adult individuals and couples aged 18 and over. In some cases, I also see young people aged 14 and above, depending on their individual circumstances and presenting needs.

Asking for help is not always easy, especially when you’re struggling with something that’s very close to you. I understand how daunting that first step of reaching out and contacting a therapist can be, which is why I always strive to provide a safe, friendly and non-judgemental space for therapy sessions. I am committed to working alongside you and through mutual discussions providing you with the strategies and tools that are the best fit for you. I have a special interest in transgenerational influences which can present as childhood trauma, attachment difficulties, anxiety and personality disorders.

Hi, I'm Gemma, I specialise in the treatment of complex trauma (childhood/adulthood). You may notice that you're a people pleaser, or a perfectionist and you might have a strong sense that you're an impostor and don't deserve to have what you have achieved. Perhaps you and the people around you notice that you can react to situations in an exaggerated way. Perhaps you're struggling with trusting others and therefore have difficulty sustaining relationships or perhaps there are ongoing disputes. You may also struggle to sleep and difficult dreams or remembering difficult moments, places and people from the past.

I could be the right therapist for you if you are experiencing yourself repeating painful patterns, in life, in friendships and within relationships. I hope to help individuals and couples to understand what is in the roots of their conflicts and unhappiness. I help individuals explore feelings of anger, rejection, disappointment and betrayal. Low self esteem and self image can lie behind many of our behaviours, choices and reactions. I help individuals explore what lies behind their insecurities and I help individuals explore their authentic selves and uniqueness, as well as helping individuals identify future possibilities.

I have been a Counsellor / Psychotherapist / Hypnotherapist for over 25years I specialised in the field addiction for many years. Working within addiction offered a wide and varied opportunity to work and become familiar with many client issues. Clients relying upon substances, use as a coping mechanism, however substance use causes further mental health issues which further complicates their ability to cope. I now work solely within private practice based at home where clients can relax in a confidential informal setting. This allows them time explore their own needs in a time frame which meets their own specific needs.

I understand that for some people starting therapy may feel daunting. I am interested in building a strong, supportive relationship. My style is warm, genuine, non-judgemental and hopeful. I strongly believe in hope, you may come to therapy feeling ‘hopeless’, if you do, I believe my role is to carry hope, until you are ready to do so yourself. I am interested in people’s stories and finding meaning and making sense of patterns and repetitive unhelpful behaviour. I will encourage self-kindness and quietening internal harsh voices. I may challenge false beliefs about yourself.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
