I work with individuals and couples experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, sexual concerns, and the impact of life transitions.
My specialist area is psychosexual therapy, where I support individuals and couples with sexual and intimacy concerns. Many people live with these difficulties for years, feeling confused, frustrated, or quietly worried. Sometimes, you may not have the words for what feels wrong only a sense that something is not as you hoped.

Areas I focus on are Trauma, PTSD, Anxiety and Depression.
My approach includes the body as well as the mind. As the phrase “The Body Keeps The Score” suggests, our experiences don’t just live in our mind, brain & thoughts, they’re felt physically too. I see mind and body as connected. Emotional stress and trauma can be held in the body, and over time, this may show up as physical symptoms or illness.

Hi there, I'm Chris. Have you or a loved one been struggling to cope with anxiety, feeling overwhelmed or low? Maybe social situations are difficult to face, or work and studies are harder to manage? Perhaps you've been experiencing really difficult unwanted and intrusive thoughts, or feeling driven to repeat certain actions. Doing the things that you used to be able to do maybe just feels too heavy. If you're a loved one, maybe you've noticed your young person change from how they used to be. If any of this sounds familiar, I can help by providing a safe and open space to support you in overcoming these challenges.

Psychotherapy begins from the premise that all human experiences, even difficult ones like depression, addiction, relationship issues and trauma have relevance and can be understood.
If you need your life to be different but you are not sure how to change then psychotherapy may be useful for you. Through the experience of being listened to at a deep level, psychotherapy can sometimes feel like being introduced to yourself. As we think together about your issues I will take you seriously enough to be honest with you.

Whether you're seeking solutions for an immediate problem or wish to explore deeper patterns in your life, we'll collaborate to find a path that feels right for you. We can start by discussing what you hope to gain from counselling, and we can explore the best options to support you. You will never be under pressure to discuss anything you don't want to. First and foremost, a counsellor's job is to listen with empathy and understanding. Whether you're seeking a sounding board for difficult emotions, a partner in problem-solving, or simply a non-judgmental presence, I am here to support you in the way that feels most beneficial.

At the core of my work is a person centred philosophy. I see every patient as different and individual which is why I tailor my approach to each person. I don’t necessarily agree with prescribing a method to a diagnosis or problem as I’ve found this is not always helpful. However I am qualified to deliver EMDR and NET, both evidence based trauma therapies.

Depression Counsellors
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
