I have an interest in art therapy; dreams, imagery, stories and object relations theory.
Hi, I’m an accredited Psychotherapeutic Counsellor (UKCP/ MBACP) with a specialism of working with children, young people and adult clients. I am trained in EMDR (Masterclass) and have many years experience working with children and families within settings, such as schools, hospices, charities, clinical settings, LAC teams and in the community – Like Violet Oaklander says ‘Play can be a serious business’. I am a humanistic, ‘integrative’ practitioner, so I use different methods to develop a warm, friendly relationship based on individual needs, respect and accepting the person as a whole – in other words - ‘I’m Ok – You’re Ok’.

We can spend time talking or we can be creative and use art, games, music and other techniques to unpick what is going on for you.
I specialise in working with children, teens, students and young professionals. There are many pressures and expectations that come with this time in life. I'd like to help unpick what is going on for you and guide you in letting go of the things that are holding you back. We will work at your pace, with no pressure to do anything you’re not comfortable with. I aim to be a collaborator in getting you to where you want to be. I’m open and approachable, and I have 5 years worth of experience working in schools, the NHS, CAMHS and Barnardo's. No concern is too big or small. I've worked with many issues, including:

As an Art psychotherapist I recognise that there is many creative ways to explore and reach your therapeutic aims.
I work in collaboration with my clients to find what they would like to bring into the therapy room and have a particular interest in personal identities and how my clients wish to be seen and accepted in the world. This includes identities around chronic illness and disability, as well as around gender, sexuality and relationship diversity. I do not work as a blank mirror but instead use my knowledge and training to create a dialogue between me and my clients.

Hello, I'm Izzy, an Art Therapist and Ecotherapist.
I tailor my approach to suit you, weaving together ecotherapy, body awareness, creativity and psychotherapy. You may find that art making helps with self-expression when words are difficult. Making art about what you're experiencing can feel easier than "sitting with" difficult emotions. Sessions normally last 1 hour and take place online.

As a person-centred, psychotherapeutic counsellor, I work with clients contending various issues. These may include anxiety, depression, grief and anger or be in relation to a personal or global situation or event, family or a specific relationship. You might feel stuck, unable to imagine a time when this will change. Carl Jung said: “Problems are not solved, they are outgrown”. Seeking support reflects your continued desire to grow.

There are many reasons why you may be seeking out a therapist to help with the issues you face in your life. You may be experiencing distressing feelings; you may be approaching important crossroads in life and you’re faced with uncertainty; you may feel like your confidence or self-esteem is low. It may also be something more difficult to put your finger on – you may have an unnameable sense that something just isn’t right with your internal world and you want to make a change. You may be wondering what it is that I can do to help, so let's start there...

I offer a soulful approach to therapy grounded in the latest psychological theory. Often, it may seem that much of modern psychological therapy merely ruffles and reorganises the surface of the things that trouble us, seeing people who are experiencing psychological suffering as complex machines to which we can apply a set psychological theories. In contrast, after 20years of working as a psychological therapist, I believe it's more appropriate to approach clients as 'souls' in need of hearing, healing, connection, meaning, and renewal.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
