Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counselling in Newark
For more than 25 years, I’ve supported adults in the NHS and more recently, in private practice, helping people find their way back to calm, confidence, and emotional balance. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, panic, low mood, self‑esteem difficulties, relationship concerns, or the impact of trauma and PTSD, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Change is absolutely possible, and therapy can be a meaningful place to start.

Every day, many men fall foul of overwhelm, burnout, and self-sabotage. Just one bad day or poor decision can threaten your health, relationships, and work - or destroy your reputation, peace, and sanity. To manoeuvre in the modern world, manage your own ego, and build and protect psychological fitness and long-term performance, facing the man in the mirror is no longer optional. My job is to make this as easy as possible, and help prevent you from becoming a statistic. Having delivered over 6000 consultations for a broad range of challenges, I offer a pragmatic and results-focused approach for those willing to do the work.

Hello - I'm Claire, an HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist. Mental health difficulties can be viewed as responses to painful experiences in life that any of us might go through – sometimes these are large events in our lives, sometimes they are a build-up of ‘smaller’ difficulties. For this reason, I work with people experiencing a wide range of symptoms and diagnoses (for example: anxiety, OCD, depression, psychosis, addiction, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, emotional eating, etc) - because our work will help resolve the root cause of the symptoms.

Life is full of events, relationships, stresses and strains and all these impact on us in many different ways. It can affect all the important things to us such as school, work, relationships and our own perception of ourselves. This can be tiring and overwhelming. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way and I believe strongly that a person can benefit from having a space to discuss their feelings and develop ideas and strategies to improve their emotional wellbeing.

Within sessions I will often augment treatment to include elements of other related approaches, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion-Focussed Therapy.
The most challenging person to be kind to is yourself. The voice of self-criticism is constantly undermining your strengths and leaving you feeling not enough. You are familiar with the experience of depression and anxiety. You find yourself stuck in a cycle of attempts to move forward, but you feel like you're stuck in mud. If this resonates with you, know that this cycle of self-criticism and feeling stuck is not a failure of character; it is a learned pattern that can be unlearned. I specialise in helping clients gently challenge that inner voice and discover the concrete steps needed to move forwards.

Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or exhausted from trying to cope with difficulties they don’t fully understand. Some are exploring whether they may be autistic and are seeking a thoughtful adult autism assessment to better understand themselves. Others are struggling with the impact of past experiences or trauma and want support to process these using approaches such as EMDR. Many have spent years masking or managing alone and are looking for a supportive space to gain clarity, reduce distress, and move forward with greater self-understanding and compassion.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.
What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.
Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.
How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
