Anxiety Counselling in New Malden
You may have heard of some of these ways of working in therapy, but don’t worry if you haven’t, what really matters is how you feel throughout our work together.
Life can be a struggle challenging and confusing. Sometimes it can be difficult to talk openly to the people in your life. As an experienced psychotherapist I provide a safe, confidential space to explore whatever is on your mind. I can support you in finding your way through the difficulties you’re experiencing, or have experienced in the past, in a way that feels right for you, and at a pace that feels comfortable. We can work together to make sense of what you’re thinking, feeling and going through, allowing you to develop a sense of healing, establish goals and grow towards them, and gain a greater understanding of yourself.

As an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, I work with anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, grief and bereavement, emotional overwhelm, people-pleasing patterns, self-worth issues, and the lasting impact of childhood experiences.
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out for support. Therapy can simply begin with recognising that something no longer feels manageable alone. I aim to offer a warm and supportive space where you can slow things down, feel genuinely heard and explore things at a pace that feels right for you.
You may appear to be coping on the outside while internally feeling overwhelmed or disconnected from yourself. Together we can start to work towards building greater self awareness, emotional clarity and connection to self.

You may be living with intense emotions, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, or the impact of trauma.
I mainly use EMDR and Schema Therapy, approaches that explore how past experiences shape present struggles and go to the roots of what keeps people stuck. This work can help break old patterns and free up space for something new and more fulfilling. I also offer EMDR-informed coaching and financial therapy for a present-day or more specific focus.

I’ve worked in private practice, charities and the NHS with a range of individual issues, particularly depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and historical trauma; couples work includes relationship breakdown, affairs, communication and conflict challenges.
In session, I'll listen, ask questions, share thoughts and feelings and ensure our pace and direction feels right for you. I like to communicate plainly and clearly, (without ‘therapy speak’), and aim to bring compassion, creativity, acceptance and myself to our meeting, as a therapist and human being; I'm very much not a 'blank page'.

Maybe you’re thinking and feeling things you don’t want to think or feel. Or maybe feeling nothing at all. Perhaps things keep going wrong; or perhaps nothing changes. It could be you feel you can’t cope. Or something has just come and hit you for six. Counselling is a safe place to explore things like that. It’s a place with the potential for personal change. Fortunately, we humans can change our minds. Literally. A fancy word for this is plasticity. Even more, we are designed to change in each other’s company. It’s how humans learn to fit in. So we make a new relationship, you and I, and this is our vehicle for change.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
