We all struggle to make sense of experiences at times, especially when our life is in transition or we have unwanted changes. Perhaps you are going through the menopause, have a new job, responsibilities or are retiring, bereaved or divorced? Change can shake our sense of who we are. Therapy with me will provide the space to think about what is important to you, what do you value and what is stopping you living the life you want? Uncertainty often brings stress and anxiety. I know how this impacts the body and mind. I can talk through calming strategies. I want you to discover your vitality and life force again .

Anxiety has a way of shaping more of your life than you'd like. For some people it looks like panic or physical sensations. For others it's never feeling good enough, holding back in relationships, going quiet when they'd want to speak up, or pushing through everything until they're exhausted. People come to me thinking something is wrong with them, when actually fear has just taken over.

The decision to attend counselling can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming. It is the quality of the 'therapeutic relationship' that is key to progress, so that you feel supported and comfortable to talk about what matters to you. I believe passionately in the counselling process, and for me the promotion of positive mental health and well-being is at the core of our work together. (Please view my website for further information including samples of client reviews.)

Taking the first step towards therapy may feel intimidating, even scary, but rest assured, you're not alone. I understand the courage it takes to seek support, especially if it's your first time. That's why I'm here to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of criticism or shame.

My core approach integrates Person-Centred, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Psychodynamic.
Talking cures can be effective to treat depression, anxiety and stress-related symptoms such as burn-out, whether or not you are also taking medication. When words feel difficult, EFT or 'tapping' can be a really helpful way through. In addition to my integrated approach I am also interested in bibliotherapy, poetry therapy, neurodiversity and LGBTQ+

I work with adults who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from themselves, often after stress, trauma, or long periods of coping alone. Many of my clients come seeking a safe, steady space to understand their emotions and nervous system. Using somatic work, EMDR, and a pluralistic approach, I help clients build regulation, process difficult experiences, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Hello, I’m Debbie, and it’s a pleasure to introduce myself. I hold a First-Class Honours degree in Counselling and have more than 20 years of experience supporting children, teenagers, and young people across both education and social care settings. Throughout my career, I have seen first-hand the many challenges young people face, as well as the strength and resilience they can discover when offered the right support at the right time. I believe every child and young person deserves a safe, respectful, and understanding space in which to be heard, and this belief lies at the heart of my work.

I see clients in my Liverpool city centre office and online. Human minds don’t fit a single template and effective therapy shouldn’t either. We start with you in mind, what’s going on for you, how you process thoughts, feelings, emotions and environments and what outcomes you’d like to see. I’m a specialist in neurodiversity. I’ve learnt and keep learning from leading edge research to develop neuro affirming therapies that are effective.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
