As a doctor of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I work with a wide range of life issues, with clients at every stage of life, from pregnancy to adulthood: babies, children & adolescents, adults, couples, families and elderly clients.
Life might feel quite unbearable right now. Work and family life may have spiralled out of control. You might be struggling to bond with your new baby, or your young child or teenager is in emotional pain. You may have lost a loved one due to a relationship breaking down or a bereavement. Perhaps your hopes and dreams have been shattered and you are wondering if there is a way out of this dark place. All of the above life events can cause us to feel many confusing emotions such as anxiety, depression or anger. You being here right now is an important step towards changing your situation for the better.

Hey there, I’m Ciara, a BACP registered integrative counsellor working in a trauma-informed way. I offer a down-to-earth, supportive space where we can make sense of what’s going on without judgement or pressure. The connection between us matters, and I think good therapy comes from feeling safe enough to be yourself and explore things at your own pace. People often come to me when things feel stuck, overwhelming, or confusing, or when they’ve been carrying things on their own for a long time. Together we look at what’s going on in a way that feels practical, grounded, and easier to navigate.

I have a lot of experience working with loss and grief, and also perinatal mental health, however I work with a wide range of issues.
My primary training is in a holistic and transpersonal model of therapy, which means I work with the whole person - mind, body, feelings and hold the perspective that the problems we face also hold potential for something new to emerge. I use an integrative and relational approach and believe therapy should adapt to meet each client’s needs. This means our sessions might sometimes involve deep discussions on concepts and theories, while at other times, we may focus more on emotions, or imagery, or something which feels more ‘coach-like’ in style.

Do you ever wonder why, despite everything going well in your life (e.g. you're in a good relationship, a successful job), something feels off? I specialise in helping people with anxiety who are highly self-critical. Often, my clients describe themselves as intellectualisers, perfectionists and/or people pleasers. You struggle to let go of control, to sit with your feelings, and set boundaries with people, but no one else would know because all your energy goes towards doing everything right. This happens when we learned to avoid our emotions like the plague, and before you know it, your life is all about doing and achieving.

I am a neuroscientist and perinatal mental health therapist who helps mothers understand what is happening in their brains and lives during the transition to parenthood.
Becoming a parent changes everything, but not always in the ways people expect, and rarely in ways that are clearly explained. Many of my clients, who are used to functioning at a high level, are surprised by how disorienting and difficult this stage of life can feel. It has impacted your sleep, identity, stress levels, mental load, relationships, and added invisible demands and pressure. Much of my work begins right there, in that gap between what you thought this experience would feel like and what is actually happening in your mind, your body, your relationships, and your sense of self.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
