As a therapist, I work with clients to help them deal with issues such as depression, anxiety and invasive thoughts. I believe that society is quick to label people and say “whats wrong with you?” whereas, I believe we should be asking “What happened to you?” My clients have included survivors of childhood abuse, neglect, sexual assault and those recovering from traumatic-based experiences that have affected their current quality of life. I offer bereavement counselling to help people navigate their pain and find their own way to make sense of their loss. I recognise that, as each person is unique, so is their grieving process.

Hi, my name is Andrew. I'm a Psychodynamic Counsellor (since 2018).
Psychodynamic counselling is a relationship where the things you can’t (yet!) think or say—your anxieties, defences, long-standing patterns of loving and hating—can begin to show themselves in the here-and-now, especially in how you experience your therapist. By noticing and putting words to these unconscious “inner object” relationships as they come alive between you and your therapist, you slowly integrate previously split-off parts of yourself, soften persecutory fear and guilt, and build a more stable capacity for trust, ambivalence, and care.

I have worked with clients with a range of issues including: Abuse, Childhood trauma Workplace bullying, Bereavement and Loss, Substance use, Women's health issues, Change of life stage eg: retirement, menopause, parenting, Loneliness, Uncertainty, Relationship issues, Identity, Trauma.
I believe that counselling is a safe space that offers an opportunity for you to be unapologetically you. To be accepted, heard and supported to explore the things that brought you into therapy. This could be big life events or a general feeling of being discontented with how things are in the moment and wanting to explore that further. Every person that accesses counselling has different needs and processes things in different ways. I do not believe that one type of counselling fits everyone or every situation. I offer a broader spectrum of modalities, knowledge and skills allowing for a more flexible way of working.

My clients appreciate my holistic approach to mental health. Their goal is usually to find their authentic selves, to become more self aware and to thrive and find joy and purpose, not just survive and settle for a life that is not working for them. We all want to be seen, heard and understood and that is often at the very heart of Healing.

I work with adults and young people in a trauma-informed way that is safe, gentle and compassionate to work towards real change.
I work in a relational way alongside clients using symbol/metaphor to gently identify experiences that words are difficult to define, using a dual processing technique. This includes talking in addition to the client’s choice of working with postcards, objects, marks/words on paper, dreams or perhaps a song that resonates with you. You may just want to talk.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
