Deciding to have therapy can be a big step so it is understandable that you may feel nervous or apprehensive. In my practice, my aim is to provide a safe place where we can explore whatever you struggle with at your own pace. I also believe that a trusting
relationship
, built upon authenticity and free from preconceptions and judgment, is an essential ingredient in any work we do together.

My aim is to build a therapeutic
relationship
with you in order for you to feel comfortable & safe enough to explore your thoughts, feelings & any difficulties.
We can sometimes forget to look after ourselves and our own needs as we are busy caring for others. Time spent with a counsellor can allow you the space to talk about and explore any issues or difficulties you may be experiencing. My decision to become a counsellor was based upon a desire to be of help to others and make a difference during distressing times. I feel with my experience and understanding I am well placed to offer support. I truly believe that good mental health and mental wellbeing is essential for all of us.

I work with individuals,
couples
, groups and families, sensitively.
When you make the decision to talk to a total stranger about your difficulties, it can sometimes provoke anxiety. However, as your therapist, my goal is to not make you feel judged, by providing a safe, confidential space for you to express those difficult feelings that you may never have been able to do. My aim is for you to feel connected with aspects of your self, which might make you feel more able to explore more complex issues of your life experience, so that you can make better sense of your world and your way of being and interacting with the connections you make within that world.

There are many reasons people come to counselling, for example bereavement,
relationship
breakdown, issues at work, past or recent traumatic events, difficulties around disordered eating or complexities associated with gender dysphoria. Whatever it is that has led you to consider counselling, I know you have a unique story to tell. Are you are struggling with low self-worth, stress or anger? Or maybe you are worried, confused, scared, misunderstood, feeling lost or experiencing other unwanted feelings? Life can be very busy, demanding and draining. Counselling is an opportunity to slow down and look inside. What do you want?

The therapeutic
relationship
is unique, different to the ones we have with friends and family.
As a therapist, I work with clients to help them deal with issues such as depression, anxiety and invasive thoughts. I believe that society is quick to label people and say “whats wrong with you?” whereas, I believe we should be asking “What happened to you?” My clients have included survivors of childhood abuse, neglect, sexual assault and those recovering from traumatic-based experiences that have affected their current quality of life. I offer bereavement counselling to help people navigate their pain and find their own way to make sense of their loss. I recognise that, as each person is unique, so is their grieving process.

You may be grieving the loss of a
relationship
or loved one.
I believe that we all have an innate tendency towards health and wholeness. Every so often, life events and situations can get in the way of accessing our inner resources to achieve growth and healing. Psychotherapy can be a valuable tool to firmly place you back on the path to living a full life. When we are faced with major or recurring life stressors we can be overwhelmed and seeking additional support, such as therapy, is a natural and positive step in taking care of yourself.

Going to therapy (sometimes known as counselling or psychotherapy) can often feel like a daunting task and finding the courage to take those initial steps can be difficult. You may already feel overwhelmed whilst searching for a therapist and have many questions, such as what do the different approaches and qualifications mean, who is experienced enough and who could help me the best? Regardless of which approach is used, one thing we do know is that the most important factor in creating positive client outcomes is the quality of the
relationship
between the therapist and client.

Are you feeling sad, lost or fearful? Are you dealing with
relationship
issues, a traumatic event or might not know why you feel unhappy, and need help to move forward in a safe space? You may want to explore and work on yourself, in a non-judgmental environment, or want to talk about difficult issues with someone you feel comfortable talking to. Some years ago, I went on my own journey through therapy, which helped me to understand the process of counselling, and value of being in a safe space with someone who showed me genuineness, acceptance, and empathy, which is what I aim to provide for my clients.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
