Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Counselling in Middlesbrough
Co founder of F&B Digital Therapy & specialist neurodivergent and low self-esteem therapist. Based in Teesside but seeing clients globally.
I'm late diagnosed AuDHD, so I get what it's like to feel weird & not fit in. If you hide behind a mask to feel normal, constantly feeling misunderstood & not knowing who you really are, this doesn't have to stay this way.
Always doubting yourself can lead to anxiety, overthinking, rejection sensitivity, low motivation, overwhelm, eating issues & OCD. But there's another story, one where you learn how to trust yourself, live authentically, become self-confident and finally feel good enough.

I'm Craig, a therapist specialising in working with eating disorders and body image issues.
Are thoughts about food or your body ruling your life? You've probably tried to change before, to eat less, eat more "normally" or promise yourself tomorrow will be different, but nothing seems to last for long.
I work online with adults across the UK, supporting people with a range of food and body issues including: binge eating, compulsive eating, bulimia, anorexia, ARFID, body dysmorphia, and disordered eating that doesn’t fit into a clear category.

Coming to therapy can be a difficult decision to make. When we are having difficulty in our lives our thinking can become unclear or unhelpful and we do things that we think might help in the short term, but can perhaps have a negative effect in the long term. This can result in becoming trapped in unhealthy cycles where you may also be experiencing unpleasant emotions. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help to unravel the complex human thoughts and emotions that sometimes contribute to being less than at our best, and find new ways of thinking and being to move forward.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward, navigating the challenges of anxiety, persistent low mood, or struggling with social anxiety, OCD, or the effects of trauma. Maybe reaching a point where something needs to change but aren’t sure how to start. Seeking relief from symptoms but also a deeper understanding of what’s driving them. In our work together, we'll go beyond managing symptoms. I’ll help you explore how your past experiences and the beliefs you've developed over time may be shaping how you feel and respond today.

Many of the people I work with have spent years feeling misunderstood, exhausted or disconnected from themselves. They may be autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, exploring whether neurodivergence explains lifelong experiences, or struggling with anxiety, burnout, trauma, masking, identity or major life transitions. They're looking for more than symptom relief, they want to understand themselves in a way that feels compassionate, respectful and meaningful, creating change that fits who they are rather than who they feel expected to be.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some arrive feeling anxious or low; others feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure why life feels heavier than it once did. Some come during times of transition, changes in work, relationships, identity, or direction, while others come simply because something no longer feels quite right.
My role is to offer a space where whatever has brought you can be explored with care, curiosity, and respect. You do not need to arrive with clear answers or a neatly defined problem. We begin where you are.

I am an accredited CBT and EMDR Psychotherapist and HCPC registered Occupational Therapist. I am happy to arrange a free 15-minute telephone consultation to discuss how I might be able help. I specialise in helping adults with trauma or PTSD / c-PTSD, low self-esteem, anxiety (including worry, phobias and OCD) and depression.
I aim to develop a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship where together we can make sense of your difficulties, build on your strengths, develop resilience and work towards real meaningful change. This may involve working on your history, staying in the present, or often a mixture of both.

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?
Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviours that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.
Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioural therapy?
Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioural change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.
How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?
While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.
What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?
The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
