Hi, I’m Caroline and I’m an integrative, heart-centred psychotherapist. I’m glad you’re here. I know it can feel like a lot to look for a therapist and reach out for support. I tried to make my page punchy and straight to the point, but it didn’t feel like me anymore, so I decided to write you a letter instead. I hope this will help you to get a sense of whether I’m the right person to hold space for you, so get yourself a cup of tea and have a read. I’m guessing you’re here because you’re carrying something that you can’t work through on your own.

Are you carrying more than you let others see; grief that sits close to the surface, anxiety or anger that flares for reasons you don't understand, or the ache of feeling different, unseen, or out of step with the world.  Perhaps something in your life has shifted: a loss, an illness, a changing relationship, the unavailability of the coping tools that once kept you steady or a new awareness of how broken the world around you seems.  Many of the people I work with are used to holding everything together and keeping going, until they can’t. On the surface everything looks ok, but inside they’re exhausted.

Many of the people I work with are used to managing things on their own while privately feeling emotionally overwhelmed, exhausted or disconnected. From the outside, they may appear capable and coping well, yet internally something feels heavy or difficult to sustain. I work with adults navigating stress, burnout, anxiety, trauma, relational difficulties and life transitions. Many are in caring, professional or high responsibility roles and are used to supporting others while struggling to prioritise themselves. Therapy offers a calm, reflective space to slow things down, make sense of what is happening beneath the surface.

At times, we can feel overwhelmed by the events and demands facing us. Life can feel daunting, and we can lose trust in ourselves to find a way forward. We can neglect ourselves and ignore areas of our lives that are painful. We may notice beliefs and habits we are stuck with that are holding us back from living life fully. Psychotherapy can help unravel the patterns we are caught in. Learning to pay attention to ourselves in a supportive space can help us to shift our perspective and find new directions. We can develop a compassionate relationship with ourselves that will help generate new energy to overcome our obstacles.

Women's Issues Counsellors
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
