I am skilled at working with clients at all stages of their therapeutic journey; whether that involves guiding you through your first exploration of your difficulties with gentle consideration of what could be different, or with clients with clearer insight regarding their goals and key problem they would like to address. I work with an open and honest warmth, and take rapport building with clients seriously to ensure the therapeutic process runs smoothly and effectively. My experience has taught me that clients with the same openness and are willing to invest in this process, achieve rewarding outcomes.

Hi, I'm Em. If you’re feeling weighed down, overwhelmed, or stuck in unhelpful patterns, it can be hard to know where to start. You might look like you’re coping on the outside, while inside you feel disconnected or on edge. I can help you to find insight and support you with growth and change. I work with adults facing challenges such as anxiety, stress, depression, relationship difficulties, loss, low self-esteem, trauma and the lasting impact of past experiences. Together, we can explore what’s beneath the surface, find ways to build resilience, regulate emotions, develop coping tools and feel safer, calmer and more in control.

“I wish things could go back to normal!”, “I want to feel like me again!” Does this sound familiar? Many of my clients have said this in one way or another. Do you live with a sense that no one understands what you’re feeling?Sometimes it comes with a sense of shame or judgement that you can’t “just get back to normal.” Many of my clients have struggled with the effects of cancer diagnosis, others grief or loss and some have become full time carers. I offer a space for you to explore your feelings (all of them) and the support to help you make decisions about how you want to live in this new “normal”.

Many of the people I work with feel exhausted from carrying too much for too long. They may struggle with anxiety, broken sleep, nervous system overwhelm, or a constant sense of being “on edge,” despite being thoughtful and self-aware. I offer calm, relational, nervous-system-informed support that helps people move out of survival mode and reconnect with rest, safety, and themselves. My work integrates psychotherapy, therapeutic hypnosis, CBTi, and body-led approaches in a gentle, grounded way.

Hi Thanks for looking at my profile... It's so difficult to know how to choose a counsellor. I believe that helpful therapy starts from co-creating and exampling an authentic relationship. I won't bombard you with jargon or too much detail here, but I feel it's important to say that I strive to offer you a safe, calm and nurturing space where you can just 'be'. Maybe you're not sure what you're feeling or why. You may have lots of narrative, or may not be able to find any accurate words for what you are going through. There's no 'right' way to be in therapy. I offer complete acceptance of whatever you bring.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
