We all experience some form of distress in our lives. It could be sadness, anger, loneliness, stress, grief, anxiety, depression or something that you can’t explain. It could be current or could have happened in the past, or you may not know when it happened. It could lead to feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope, it could be affecting the relationships around you both personally or professionally. There are many things that contribute to this distress and being aware of them can help to ease the connected emotions. Counselling can help you do this by providing a safe and confidential space to explore and reflect upon these feelings

Hi, I'm Em. If you’re feeling weighed down, overwhelmed, or stuck in unhelpful patterns, it can be hard to know where to start. You might look like you’re coping on the outside, while inside you feel disconnected or on edge. I can help you to find insight and support you with growth and change. I work with adults facing challenges such as anxiety, stress, depression, relationship difficulties, loss, low self-esteem, trauma and the lasting impact of past experiences. Together, we can explore what’s beneath the surface, find ways to build resilience, regulate emotions, develop coping tools and feel safer, calmer and more in control.

I specialise in working with neurodivergent people, trans, nonbinary, bisexual, queer, and gay folks, and those struggling with their relationship with body image, eating, and self-esteem - and often in the intersections between these areas! I'm not a blank-slate therapist - I bring my authentic self so that you can feel safe to do the same. My style is honest, practical, warm, and down-to-earth - my own lived experiences of recovery from an eating disorder, depression, and anxiety, as well as adult ADHD diagnosis, enable me to be deeply empathetic as well as blunt and direct where needed!

“I wish things could go back to normal!”, “I want to feel like me again!” Does this sound familiar? Many of my clients have said this in one way or another. Do you live with a sense that no one understands what you’re feeling?Sometimes it comes with a sense of shame or judgement that you can’t “just get back to normal.” Many of my clients have struggled with the effects of cancer diagnosis, others grief or loss and some have become full time carers. I offer a space for you to explore your feelings (all of them) and the support to help you make decisions about how you want to live in this new “normal”.

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting, especially if you’re used to coping on your own. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, struggling in relationships, or simply finding life more difficult than usual. Whatever has brought you here, you’re welcome exactly as you are. At the heart of my work is the belief that everyone deserves a space where they can talk openly and honestly without fear of judgement. Together we can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace. Many people come to counselling worried about being judged or misunderstood; with me, you will be heard and accepted.

Most people aren’t broken. They’re just used to not being heard. I work as a counsellor and psychotherapist from a person-centred perspective, grounded in a simple but often overlooked belief: people already hold the capacity to understand themselves, face what’s difficult, and change the direction of their lives. In a culture obsessed with quick fixes and neat labels, I offer something different—a space where you don’t have to perform, explain yourself perfectly, or be anything other than real. A space built on honesty, empathy, and acceptance. I don’t position myself as the expert on your life. You are.

My clients have been holding it together for a long time. Functioning, often capable, but carrying something underneath that won't shift. Some are under relentless professional pressure. Others carry trauma from earlier in life, childhood experiences, abuse, or relationships that left a mark. What they share is that getting by isn't enough anymore. They're tired of managing. They're ready to move forward. Many have tried talking therapy. Some found it helpful up to a point. Others felt understood but unchanged. They come to me wanting something that works at a deeper level, without having to relive every detail.

All are welcome, however I have particular experience in working with young adults, and those experiencing change as a result of significant life shift (bereavement, a new job, leaving home, the end of a relationship), and how that relates to new identities, confidence, autonomy and relationships . I see our minds and emotions as deeply connected to our bodies, our environments and our lived experiences, and bring a whole life attitude to my counselling work. I am LGBTQIA+ friendly, and experienced with neurodivergence.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
