For when being hard on yourself has become exhausting. Perhaps you spend a lot of time overthinking, worrying about what other people think, or feeling like you’re never quite good enough. You might be incredibly hard on yourself, struggle with shame or low self-worth, or find yourself using behaviours to cope with feelings that have become difficult to manage. From the outside, you may seem like you’re coping. Inside, things can feel very different. I offer a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you don’t have to pretend that everything is okay.

Are you anxious, low, or unsettled without fully understanding why? Struggling to concentrate, questioning your thoughts, feelings or actions, or preoccupied with what others might think? Anxiety and depression can be understandable responses to people-pleasing patterns or emotionally confusing relationships, where self-confidence has been gradually worn down. Even choosing a therapist can feel overwhelming when trust has been shaken. You want clarity, emotional stability, to identify your needs, build firm boundaries, and assert them in a way that others respect. Sessions are available both in person and online.

Are you struggling? We are all affected by a form of hardship at some point in our lives. We may find ourselves stuck with seemingly no way out. It can feel as though we're focused solely on survival, leaving us with little or no energy for things that bring us fulfilment, meaning and purpose. Therapy provides a safe, warm space to explore problems and develop practical solutions. Indeed, as we embark on your counselling journey, we open up to a range of possibilities: a new chapter with you as the writer.

You may be used to coping, carrying responsibility and keeping things going, while inside you feel anxious, exhausted or no longer quite yourself. Perhaps you are facing burnout, grief, serious illness, a difficult change, or questions about who you are and what comes next. You may be neurodivergent, or wondering whether you might be, and tired of having to adapt yourself to fit. You do not need a clear explanation or a crisis to begin counselling. We can start with what feels difficult now and make sense of it together, at a pace that feels manageable.

If you're anxious or depressed, or feeling stressed because of particular issues in your life then its hard to choose a counsellor that might help you. I never knew whether to pick a therapist that looked as unhinged as I felt, or go for one that seemed to have life sorted! We often feel we have to pretend to seem 'normal' or put a mask on to face to world, but therapy can be the place where you can be yourself (or work out who that could be). I try to offer you space where you are safe to explore what is affecting you, and help you reach a way forward.

Coming from an Integrative approach means that I can draw from a range of therapeutic approaches. This enables me to engage with you in a way that will be most effective and tailored to best suit your individual needs.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
