I am an experienced and qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I am registered with the BACP (British Association For Counselling & Psychotherapy). My name is Patrick Breheny, I am a father of three young boys and Husband. I believe in good communication both in my personal life and professional life, I have a strong belief that Counselling is a way of life and I use the foundations of Counselling to enhance all my relationships. Born in Manchester I am familiar with the culture and the togetherness Manchester brings to peoples lives.
Do you feel as though you're 'stuck' in a place you'd rather not be? Do you feel as though life is becoming gradually less enjoyable? Do you find yourself asking 'is this it'? I've felt that way too - most people have. I help people realise that unwanted thoughts, feelings, and circumstances can, and do, change. We often define ourselves through our fears, insecurities, and anxieties and in doing so create a mental prison around ourselves. Common behaviours such as resistance and avoidance can make this even worse. Using traditional psychotherapy techniques, I focus on releasing people from these kinds of emotional chains.
Our mental health and wellbeing are paramount to us. It saddens me to sometimes to see what little care we take of it. We see our GP’s as soon as we have a physical ailment. However, tend to ignore how we feel emotionally, forgetting our emotional wellbeing is part of our whole-making. It has been my life long passion to encourage people to put themselves first and follow their dreams. I am a great believer in the power of our mind and what we can achieve if we dare to. We all experience some form of distress in our lives. We feel sad, angry, lonely, depressed, anxious, stressed, grief or even feeling that we cant always explain.
I work with the whole person because how you experience and respond to life is unique to you. I have a master’s degree in Clinical Counselling and I am also an NHS Counsellor working in a Psychological Therapies service. I have helped people work through a wide range of issues including overcoming an abusive relationship, complex grief, PTSD flashbacks, Anxiety, Depression, Anger, fear of connection, painful separation and divorce, workplace bullying, child sexual, physical, emotional abuse, historical child neglect and fear of abandonment, Domestic violence, gambling addictions, disordered eating, and more.
Expecting to have some enjoyment and a sense of fulfilment in life is not a pipe dream – it’s your purpose and your right. If you’re like 99% of others, then you can’t quit your job and travel the world because a quote on social media told you that’s how to be happy. Life is tough, and things often get thrown our way that knock us sideways. You might even be waking up more than you’d care to asking: “what is the point in all this?”. Or maybe you feel stuck in a cycle, struggling to make changes in your life? You're not alone, and you don't have to feel this way.
Throughout life we all suffer from personal, emotional and psychological issues. Usually we overcome these but sometimes we can get stuck, tangled up and become negatively affected. If you are finding yourself experiencing anxiety or depression, or struggling with any other issues, then know that help is always available. Whatever it is, I am here to listen attentively, with empathy, without any judgement, and in complete confidence. There are multiple approaches to counselling, but rather than push a particular one (that may not be suitable for you) I prefer we work together to decide which is the best way forward for you.
I aim to take the stress out of therapy by providing flexibility around the time of sessions and delivery of sessions so that you can focus on what is bringing you to therapy. Through my free 20 minute telephone consultation we can get a feel for if we would work well together. I offer outdoor therapy allowing us to work together in the fresh air and natural surroundings of Heaton Park as we literally and figuratively walk side by side through the issues that are bringing you therapy. I deliver a person centred approach that places you as the expert as I guide the conversation and help you to make sense of the life around you.
So often clients' unhelpful experiences of therapy are attributed to their therapist being "silent", "difficult to connect with" or (at worst) "like a brick wall". The psychologically informed, dedicated and authentic experience I deliver requires me to be active, present and, primarily, something resembling an authentic human being whom I hope you will trust and feel at ease with. You will have the time and space to talk (without awkward silences!) and where desired, I can share with you knowledge/theory acquired from 10 years clinical experience, to help us collaboratively explore, enlighten and enhance your lived experience.
I know things can be difficult but you don’t need to struggle alone, because I'm here to help. As a qualified therapist, my mission is to help you to overcome your fears and doubts and realise what you are truly capable of. I offer a friendly and confidential one-to-one counselling service supporting adults, young people, and children with a variety of emotional, mental, and physical issues. I will be empathic, honest, and non-judgemental during our sessions.
Whatever you’re going through, you’ve arrived here because you are looking for something in your life to be different. This could be the way you perceive yourself, your relationships with others, or your world. It can be difficult to know where to turn in times like this and sometimes you can feel very alone with your own experiences, struggling to open up to those around you for fear of being burdensome, not understood or accepted. Believing that each person can be empowered to find their own answers, we’ll work as a team to facilitate insight, as well as to discover solutions to problems.
Are you struggling with your thoughts or feelings at the moment and don’t feel like you have anyone you can express them to? Do you need somebody to listen who isn’t going to judge you and will be able to show you understanding and compassion? Are you feeling anxious and looking for someone to soothe and comfort you? Do you need someone to listen to your worries and your beliefs about yourself? Many of us think and feel this way but feel alone as we don’t share how we feel. A kind, non-judgemental ear can really help you to feel heard and accepted.
Maybe you are feeling sad, hurt, confused or lost? I understand that there can be a real feeling of apprehension in reaching out for help. I also understand the power and enrichment that can come from taking that tentative step. I promise to offer a warm, safe environment for you to explore your emotions. I am committed to supporting you to make connections and gain a deeper understanding of your experiences past and present. Your voice, your truth, your story will be heard without judgement. I will endeavour to help you to recognise the strength you have inside to heal yourself.
I am a qualified Psychologist with over 15 years’ work experience in counselling practice/ the NHS. I work with people to help them feel less stuck, more content and empowered in their lives. I have in-depth understanding of how we can create unhelpful patterns which affect our present lives. I also provide life coaching and uniquely combine this with therapy by helping you work towards your goals in an exploratory or structured way.
Therapy can be a powerful way of making life more manageable and can even make it more enjoyable. You might be having a really hard time - perhaps you're feeling confused, lost, or lonely. Maybe you are going through difficulties in your relationships. Another reason people come to therapy is to address how the past might be affecting them in the present. You may want to understand yourself more deeply. I offer a supportive space for you to explore what you need to. I work in a safe, and trauma informed way. Therapy can be a place to talk about things you may have never shared about before.
I know sometimes it's very difficult to put in words what you're really experiencing and each time you try to speak to family or friends they just don't seems to understand where you're coming from and sometimes they try to advise you on what to do, but you're left frustrated. You might even find it difficult to understand what it is that you are really experiencing and the emotions that are associated with it. There might be situations which triggers a specific thought or feeling and it has changed your whole day and you quite can't identify it. You might be feeling anxious and feel like everything is out of your hands.
Are you seeking peace of mind and relief from your current emotional challenges? Whatever it may be that you are struggling with, I can help you. As a specialist in stress management I can help you start to get your life into the right balance. Together, we can find the right solutions for you. I can assure you that it is my aim to provide you with the best experience possible and give you the help you need in the fewest number of sessions possible.

Looking for a compassionate, experienced, kind clinical psychologist? Perhaps you feel a bit stuck, as though you can't make sense of why you are feeling the way you are, or struggling to take the steps you need to move forwards? Do you feel low, anxious, a bit lost or guilty and are finding this is getting in the way of your life? Maybe you struggle with the idea that you do deserve a good and happy life. Have you had difficult life experiences that are still haunting you now and preventing you being the person you want to be? Do these difficulties impact on your relationship with yourself, and your relationship with others?
I believe that human wellness is multidimensional. No singular event, element or experience of living can truly cause wellness or suffering. It’s a complex interplay between various factors which make up our experience of life. With this in mind, there can be no singular therapy and counselling service that can heal all. There can be no singular psychological approach which is capable of explaining the complexity of the human experience. This is why my approach is integrative and holistic, with a collaborative style that pulls in ideas from various models and ideologies.
