Hello, my name is Cornetta and I am the mother of an adult child. I grew up in a difficult home environment and experienced ACE. I am often asked why have I been able to stay centred and grounded. I laugh and say “I have made lots of mistakes and I am human!’ Reflecting on this, I feel it’s my ability to listen, learn, and reflect but most of all to look at my life with compassion, acceptance, openness, and love. If you feel I can be of service and help please contact me and read some more. I am an integrative addiction therapist and psychotherapist. As a result of working in different settings,

I firmly believe that we are fundamentally relational beings, ones that need security, understanding & care above all else. Real change comes not from trying to fix thinking patterns, self-concepts or the past, but in shifting relational dynamics in the here and now and finding new ways of being with another. This is what I focus on in therapy with my clients, and I draw on my background and experience in modern relational psychoanalysis, developmental theory, and in depth study of phenomenology & existential philosophy to look at what emerges and how that can inform meaningful change in your life.

You’ve landed on this page for a reason. Maybe you’re tired from always putting others first but feel selfish for caring about yourself. Maybe you’re feeling too anxious to even be around other people and are spending a lot of time with your thoughts. Maybe you want to escape or block out your thoughts altogether because they feel too scary to be with. Whatever the reason is, you know that something doesn’t feel right and you can’t carry on doing it alone.

There are many reasons that people come to therapy. For some, it might be that past events are impacting life in the present. For others, it is a current issue that requires working through. I have experience of working with: abuse, anxiety, bereavement, depression, divorce, eating disorders, employment difficulties, health related issues, mental health issues, OCD, parenting, relationships, self harm, separation, sexual assault, stress and trauma.

Choosing a professional to help you with your struggles can be a stressful process. Many people have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy but aren’t sure what it involves, and don’t know whether they need CBT, counselling or something else. That’s not a problem - I will provide an initial phone or video consultation to answer questions, listen to your concerns and discuss with you what you are looking for. My first session involves an assessment of your current difficulties from the perspective of a trained mental health professional, and working with you to establish whether CBT or counselling would be most beneficial for you.

Sometimes the road gets rough, and the things we've always found so easy to do suddenly become overwhelming, that's when we need someone to talk to; Someone to listen and possibly shed a light in the darkness. Or maybe even someone just to be there.

Experiencing and struggling with unhelpful behaviour patterns or processing prolonged feelings of loss, uncertainty, anxiety, stress, disconnection, frustration, anger, sadness or loneliness can have a significant impact on all aspects of our lives. We all need support at different times in life, seeking professional help at these times can be very rewarding in moving your life in the direction you want. I have a pluralistic philosophy to therapy, which is a number of different therapeutic models can be explored, finding what best suits you session by session.

Life can be hard, and sometimes the struggle to make sense of your feelings can seem overwhelming. This is ok. You may be at a point in your life when you feel stuck, and unable to move on, and don't know what to do. This is absolutely ok. You may feel that your life could improve and that you could live it more fully. Definitely ok. You may have noticed you keep repeating unhelpful behaviour patterns. This is ok, too.

This Easter you have resigned yourself to eating too many mini eggs and bingeing Luther on Netflix whilst ignoring your existential dread. You pour another glass of wine and wonder where it went wrong. Wasn’t being an adult supposed to feel freeing? Instead you feel empty, confused and embarrassingly, rather lonely. You try and put yourself out there, but a string of pointless dates with emotionally unavailable men are not doing it for you. Your flatmates are all loved up and it feels like your twenties are slipping through your fingers. But you know better than to expect emotional support from your family; that's not what they do.

I understand that starting counselling or therapy can feel a bit like embarking on a new journey, when you can’t see where it leads. It can help to know that you’re not on that journey alone, and to work with a therapist who moves at a safe pace for you. The relationship between counsellor and client is incredibly important and you are probably looking for someone that makes you feel safe, accepted, and understood.

Are you an LGBTQ+ person and looking to gain some clarity in life? Are you struggling with your romantic relationships or trying to make sense of your past? You might find that you feel isolated, alone and are missing out on connections with loved ones. These difficult feelings can cloud the parts of your life which should bring you joy; this unhappiness can lead to further disconnect with those around us.

At this point in your life when you are looking for therapy, you may have a hunch that the burden you carry has grown too much to hold on your own and somebody needs to hear you out. Many conversations heal, but the difference between a psychologist and a friend is that looking at things with the tools and theories we have at our disposal can help you define the problem, perhaps reframe it and then resolve it. That is the starting point for feeling better. You may wonder whether anything can really help, because everything may seem complicated and deep, but the wonder of your own self is waiting for you to unfold.

Substance Use Counsellors
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
