I am part of the LGBT+ community and identify as cis gay man using he/him pronouns.
I believe that human wellness is multidimensional. No singular event, element or experience of living can truly cause wellness or suffering. It’s a complex interplay between various factors which make up our experience of life. With this in mind, there can be no singular therapy and counselling service that can heal all. There can be no singular psychological approach which is capable of explaining the complexity of the human experience. This is why my approach is integrative and holistic, with a collaborative style that pulls in ideas from various models and ideologies.

I work with clients from all backgrounds but have particular experience working with men and with LGBT+ issues.

Although I regularly work with clients of all ages and genders, the majority of my clients tend to be young men , who have unresolved feelings or experiences which are impacting on their daily lives. I work as an integrative counsellor, from a person-centred perspective. This means that you can bring whatever you wish to the session, while we work at your pace and depth. I employ theory and techniques from CBT, psychodynamic and other therapeutic philosophies which I feel may be useful. Where we start is not the important thing as ultimately, you will naturally discover the things that matter the most to you.

I am a Counsellor based in Greater Manchester offering online sessions. Life can be challenging, and in places it can feel intolerable and overwhelming it can be difficult to know where to start unravelling this, how to make changes, what changes, if any, we need to make, and to try to make sense of why we feel the way that we do. This can be a very painful experience but however dark it may be today, doesn't mean tomorrow won't be lighter, counselling can offer an opportunity to be heard and to be understood. I work with clients from all backgrounds but have particular experience working with Addiction and with LGBT+ issues.

I offer a relaxed and flexible approach to therapy removing the stress so that you can focus on what is bringing you to sessions. Through my free 20 minute telephone consultation we can get a feel for if we would work well together. I offer Zoom sessions and also offer outdoor therapy. Outdoor therapy allows us to work together in the natural surroundings of Heaton Park as we literally and figuratively walk side by side through the issues that are bringing you to therapy. Due to the popularity of outdoor therapy the locations in which i can offer it are ever increasing so please feel free to enquire regarding your location.

In psychodynamic psychotherapy, there is a focus on your emotional world and how feelings are expressed or avoided; in time, we'd identify recurring themes and patterns in your life; we would think about past experience and how it relates to the present; we'd get to know your relationships, including the therapy relationship itself; and, because emotional conflict is invariably woven into the fabric of our lives, we would explore the inner world of daydreams, dreams, images and thoughts. Saying whatever comes to mind - if you feel free to say it - is a powerful and meaningful way to relieve distress and to find change in your life.

Expecting to have some enjoyment and a sense of fulfilment in life is not a pipe dream – it’s your purpose and your right. If you’re like 99% of others, then you can’t quit your job and travel the world because a quote on social media told you that’s how to be happy. Life is tough, and things often get thrown our way that knock us sideways. You might even be waking up more than you’d care to asking: “what is the point in all this?”. Or maybe you feel stuck in a cycle, struggling to make changes in your life? You're not alone, and you don't have to feel this way.

I work with people who are feeling stuck and looking for help to move forward. This could be around difficulty dealing with emotions, self-destructive behaviours, self-criticism or feelings of not being good enough. It could be being held back in life by anxiety, distressing thoughts or compulsive behaviours. It could involve uncertainty around questions of self-identity, relationships or life direction, or just a sense that things aren’t right. Whether these issues are recent or more long-standing, change for the better is possible and therapy can help.

How can I find a therapist in Manchester?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counsellors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counselling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
