Life is difficult. Every day you face a thousand intangible threats to your mental well-being and self-esteem. Your brain reacts, creating a collection of sensations which we call anxiety. Sometimes you feel hopeless-there's no way out of trouble and you feel yourself becoming more withdrawn, isolated and depressed . Or, perhaps living with the person you love is impossible. Talking things over with family or friends can help. But you may have reasons why that's not appropriate or you need specific specialist help. Then is the time to speak with an impartial, trained, professional, in confidence.

It is very human to have psychological difficulties at various points in our lives. Difficult things can happen to us leaving us feeling scared and/ or low/ depressed . Society can also make us feel pressurised to look a certain way and we can feel pretty worthless if don't believe that we conform to these societal expectations. All of these can be both frightening and overwhelming, which makes it so important to have a calm, compassionate and skilful therapist to guide you towards recovery.

I work with people with a broad spectrum of presenting issues, from depression and anxiety to domestic abuse, bereavement, addiction and sexuality.
Although I regularly work with clients of all ages and genders, the majority of my clients tend to be young men, who have unresolved feelings or experiences which are impacting on their daily lives. I work as an integrative counsellor, from a person-centred perspective. This means that you can bring whatever you wish to the session, while we work at your pace and depth. I employ theory and techniques from CBT, psychodynamic and other therapeutic philosophies which I feel may be useful. Where we start is not the important thing as ultimately, you will naturally discover the things that matter the most to you.

I have experience of working with many people who are suffering the effects of depression , anxiety, low self-esteem, lack of motivation and confidence, as well as loss, sleep issues and more.
Does it feel to you like no matter how hard you try, you can't seem to shift how you are feeling and you are overwhelmed by it all? Change is possible and there is a way through. Imagine if you woke up this morning and everything feels right, things make sense and you are able to take control of what is going on, allowing you to live your life free from limitations. It may not be easy, but you can begin to feel that life has more meaning and that you are experiencing healthy well-being again.

I believe that life is filled with challenges and obstacles for a reason; that these have inherent in them a great potential for personal growth and transformation that only becomes manifest once we face our problems and endeavour to understand them. The first step towards overcoming our sorrow is to listen to what it has to tell us: the lesson that it is here to teach. Nonetheless, most of us do not have the presence, nor the guidance, nor the knowledge of how to provide our difficult thoughts and emotions with the space that they need. This lack of space is what leads to increased anxiety, depression , as well as low self-esteem.

At certain points in our lives, we might find ourselves in what may seem like an unbreakable cycle of self-destructive behaviours, overwhelming emotions and a sense of disconnect to those around us, or perhaps even within ourselves. If you’re reading this, it is likely that you currently find yourself somewhere within that cycle or you may have feelings of anxiety, depression or low self-worth. You may be experiencing relationship difficulties, intrusive and obsessive thoughts, self-harm, child-hood trauma or grief. Whatever the reason may be, I just want to firstly remind you that you are not alone.

Our past and present are intimately linked by our memories. Our memories are heavily influenced and based on feelings we had surrounding an event or experience. These experiences may be impacting your life right now, even the ones that might seem irrelevant or insignificant. If we don't become aware of this connection it will keep affecting our future, which over time can cause us stress. Prolonged stress can manifest itself in physical forms, including illness, lack of energy, problems with sleep, headaches, depression and anxiety. When you are mentally healthy you are able to handle life's challenges.

I became a therapist because I like people - I like to understand their stories and how that has brought them to where they are. When you are feeling stuck because of anxiety or depression it is usually pretty difficult to believe anyone would want to listen. Well I do. I want to help you discover and explore the events, thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behaviour that have made you feel trapped so that you can make changes. Imagine being able to see your friends, attend events, even just sleep, without anxious or self critical thoughts wearing you down. That is what therapy with me can offer.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
