With my brother diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia nearly 30 years ago, I have personal experience of the family sacrifices and struggles related to the pain and stigma of mental illness . Having since, committing my life to the improvement of people’s emotional fitness and mental resilience, with support from organisations such as SANE and MIND, my own journey has allowed me to discover the true benefits of therapy first-hand. Personal therapy is proving invaluable for people to manage certain difficult or crisis situations in their lives and so transform their problems into major opportunities for personal growth.

I help people with chronic pain and illness to experience a better quality of life in a holistic way. This may involve exploring and working with related root issues, beliefs, perceptions, physical sensations, present or past experiences, emotions, lifestyle and unconscious blocks to wellbeing, freeing up more of your energy and enabling a deeper connection with yourself, others and life. I also help people overcome stress, anxieties and/or trauma related to medical procedures (including pregnancy/adverse birth experiences), whether they are fears or phobias without a known cause, or due to previous difficult experiences.

Having musculoskeletal injury and chronic pain can be tough, especially when it affects how you feel, how you feel about yourself, and stops you doing the things that you love and are important. But research shows that the brain controls our recovery and that those who understand their pain hurt less. I’m a personable psychologist who specialises in injury and chronic pain . I can help you answer your questions about injury and pain , and put you back in control of your recovery and being you again. My support uses the latest pain science research and provides a unique blend of pain education, psychology, and wellbeing promotion.

Hello, my name’s Christine - thanks for pausing to look at my profile. I’ve been a health professional for over 30 years. All this experience has taught me one thing: so much of a treatment's success will depend on you feeling comfortable with me. So, the first thing I want to describe is my approach to therapy. With sensitivity and compassion, I will use my skills as a psychotherapist and physiotherapist to understand the issues you face.

My role is to be a calming centre and supportive partner, sitting with you through the pain and anxiety, and journeying with you to a life that feels more whole, present and fulfilling.
Do you feel out of touch with life and yourself? Do you feel a heaviness that you think will never lift? Do you feel that a ‘normal’, happy life is out of reach? It can feel like a life without anxiety, hopelessness and fear is impossible and that the experiences and relationships you yearn to fully enjoy and be present for are unattainable.

This may include CBT for depression, anxiety, panic, stress, low self esteem, anger, OCD, trauma, PTSD, workplace conflict, addictions and chronic pain .
Choosing a professional to help you with your struggles can be a stressful process. Many people have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy but aren’t sure what it involves, and don’t know whether they need CBT, counselling or something else. That’s not a problem - I will provide an initial phone or video consultation to answer questions, listen to your concerns and discuss with you what you are looking for. My first session involves an assessment of your current difficulties from the perspective of a trained mental health professional, and working with you to establish whether CBT or counselling would be most beneficial for you.

I am committed to supporting people in healing from relational trauma, developmental trauma, childhood trauma and interpersonal trauma of all kinds. Human beings are amazing, remarkable and resilient in our ability to cope with adversity. We often compartmentalise or dissociate what happens to us so we can carry on living. We also turn to all manner of addictions and behaviours that on the surface may seem disordered and destructive yet at the same time they make perfect sense. They protect us, help us to stay in control, help numb the pain , help us to survive, and help communicate our stories.

I also have lived and professional experience with chronic pain and illness - including post-covid recovery.
I am a qualified person-centred counsellor. Person-centred means the therapeutic process is centred around you. I offer a private space, without fear of judgement or expectations - which are perfect conditions to work together to get what you want from counselling. My sessions are purposely laid back, where you and I are both free to be ourselves in this space. I offer a discount to counselling/psychotherapy students who need sessions for their studies.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
