Almost 4 years' experience of providing therapy to clients experiencing cancer.
Looking into therapy might be a new experience for you, but you’re looking into it for a reason; whether it’s work-related stress, relationship issues, feeling low or anxious, experiencing low self-esteem, or trying to process something that has had an impact on your wellbeing. I offer a safe space for you to talk, and say things that you may find difficult to say to anyone else, or even say out loud. You won’t be judged, you will be accepted, heard and valued. I’m very down to earth, open minded and do not shock easily. My aim is to help you feel at ease so that we can work together to improve your wellbeing.

Hi, I’m Anita, and I believe counselling can offer a calm, reflective space where you can begin to understand yourself more deeply and make sense of what you’re experiencing. People come to counselling for different reasons. You may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure why things feel difficult. You might be facing a specific challenge, noticing old patterns repeating, or finding that past experiences are still shaping your present. Sometimes there’s a sense that something isn’t right, and you want space to explore it. You don’t need to arrive with the right words or know what you want to work on, we can begin wherever you are.

Let’s be real: figuring out life can be exhausting. Maybe you’re doing "fine" on paper, but inside, you’re constantly overthinking, feeling "stuck," or just tired of trying to meet everyone else’s expectations. If you’re looking for a space where you can finally take off the mask and just be, I’m glad you’re here. As an Integrative Counsellor, I don’t believe in "one size fits all" therapy. You’re a unique human, so our sessions will be too. We’ll talk like real people—no clinical jargon, just honest conversation. Whether you’re navigating a big life change or trying to quiet that inner critic.

Life can feel overwhelming when anxiety, low mood, or stress take over. For some, it shows up in sleepless nights, low self-esteem, relationship issues, or turning to gambling, food, drugs or work to cope. Others work with me because they’ve lost their direction or sense of identity, & just want to feel like themselves again. Often the mind & body mirror each other. Stress, tension, & pain don’t just live in our thoughts, they show up in our bodies. The weight we carry emotionally often affects how we feel physically. My work helps you understand these connections, so you can find clarity, balance, & the confidence to move forward.

It can be overwhelming finding the right therapist and therapeutic approach for you. I aim to make the process of therapy clear and comprehensible, starting with building a shared understanding (formulation) of your difficulties and setting goals. Over the last 14 years I have worked across the NHS and independent practice, supporting adults and young people with mood difficulties (including anxiety and depression), adjustment to physical health conditions, and eating disorders. My clinical experience and training, together with your self-knowledge, is our starting point for therapeutic work.

Explore the journey that led you to the Psychology Today website in a chill environment with a cup of tea. Counselling is often a bit of "me" time to step back and obtain a better understanding of yourself, which may have been crowded out during the business of life or abruptly shifted. I will integrate your strengths as they are an important part of wellbeing as you continue your path. I am currently available Thursday evening.

I also specialise in supporting adults adjusting to a long-term health condition (e.g. Chronic Pain, Chronic fatigue syndrome/ME, Cancer, or Cardiology, Gastroenterology, or Dermatology conditions).
Hi, I’m Dr Katrina Brown. Welcome to my page. You’re probably here because you're a high performer who keeps everything together on the outside. But underneath, you may be struggling in ways no one sees. Perhaps the strategies that once helped you cope may no longer be working. Maybe you’ve even experienced a recent identity shift, like a diagnosis or life change, and now you feel uncertain about who you are or what comes next. When these struggles stay hidden, they quickly become isolating and exhausting. You may find yourself overthinking, feeling stuck, or quietly battling anxiety, burnout, or low mood.

Living with a long-term health condition can affect far more than your physical health. You may be adjusting to a diagnosis, feeling overwhelmed, or struggling to feel like yourself again. I also work with people who feel stuck, burnt out, or off track, even without a specific diagnosis. Most people I see want to feel more in control, regain direction, and move forward in a way that feels realistic and sustainable.

It is entirely normal, in life, to feel confused, upset, anxious, unsure or challenged; these are all feelings that show that we are human. I provide you with the tools to use if life feels overwhelming, or when you want to make further improvements or understand yourself better. Psychotherapy is for anyone and everyone and is as normal a part of self-care as exercise or getting a haircut. It is an opportunity to do what is essential but that too often is overlooked: allowing ourselves the space to understand ourselves better. Seeking support through psychotherapy can help to deepen self-awareness around life’s tensions.

How does cancer affect mental health?
A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?
The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?
Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counselling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?
The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
