I offer face-to-face, telephone and online support with a range of issues such as relationship struggles, anxiety , depression and low mood, low self-esteem, big life changes, loss and bereavement, stress, work-life balance, trauma - to name a few. I also offer therapy sessions outside where we can talk whilst walking in nearby natural spaces. My core training is in Transactional Analysis psychotherapy, which provides practical approaches to understanding ourselves in relation to the situations we find ourselves in - so there is some emphasis on self-exploration.

I work with individuals on a whole range of different issues, from anxiety , feelings of low mood and stress, to relationship issues, bullying and unhealthy patterns of behaviour, for example. People turn to therapy, usually, when they find that they are stuck: either not knowing what to do next, or how to get out of unhelpful repetitive situations.

I have experience of working with a variety of conditions including Depression  Anxiety Disordered eating Low self-confidence & self esteem  Relationship difficulties Loss of identity Bereavement Neurodiversity OCD.
There are many reasons why people reach out for support. There may be a specific reason, you may want to understand yourself better, you could be struggling to cope, feel anxious or depressed, or something might not 'feel right'. Are you struggling with anxiety due to loss, relationships, work or coming to terms with episodes from your past? Maybe you want to explore why you behave, think or feel as you do, which can lead to positive change or self-acceptance. Have you kept worries to yourself for a while, not sleeping and not sharing how you really feel because you’re frightened that people won’t understand or that you’ll be a burden?

Life is difficult. Every day you face a thousand intangible threats to your mental well-being and self-esteem. Your brain reacts, creating a collection of sensations which we call anxiety . Sometimes you feel hopeless-there's no way out of trouble and you feel yourself becoming more withdrawn, isolated and depressed. Or, perhaps living with the person you love is impossible. Talking things over with family or friends can help. But you may have reasons why that's not appropriate or you need specific specialist help. Then is the time to speak with an impartial, trained, professional, in confidence.

I work with people who are feeling stuck and looking for help to move forward. This could be around difficulty dealing with emotions, self-destructive behaviours, self-criticism or feelings of not being good enough. It could be being held back in life by anxiety , distressing thoughts or compulsive behaviours. It could involve uncertainty around questions of self-identity, relationships or life direction, or just a sense that things aren’t right. Whether these issues are recent or more long-standing, change for the better is possible and therapy can help.

Do you feel as though you're 'stuck' in a place you'd rather not be? Do you feel as though life is becoming gradually less enjoyable? Do you find yourself asking 'is this it'? I've felt that way too - most people have. I help people realise that unwanted thoughts, feelings, and circumstances can, and do, change. We often define ourselves through our fears , insecurities, and anxieties and in doing so create a mental prison around ourselves. Common behaviours such as resistance and avoidance can make this even worse. Using traditional psychotherapy techniques, I focus on releasing people from these kinds of emotional chains.

I have experience of working with many people who are suffering the effects of depression, anxiety , low self-esteem, lack of motivation and confidence, as well as loss, sleep issues and more.
Does it feel to you like no matter how hard you try, you can't seem to shift how you are feeling and you are overwhelmed by it all? Change is possible and there is a way through. Imagine if you woke up this morning and everything feels right, things make sense and you are able to take control of what is going on, allowing you to live your life free from limitations. It may not be easy, but you can begin to feel that life has more meaning and that you are experiencing healthy well-being again.

Do you feel impacted by difficult life problems as a result of coping with traumatic experiences, managing depression/ anxiety or dealing with difficult emotions? Many people find it easier to talk to someone who they see as being separate or an "outsider" to their life rather than friends or family. I can help you make sense of events (past and ongoing) in your life and resolve complicated feelings linked to these. However, you don't have to be at crisis point or feel unwell to have counselling! Therapy can be used to better understanding of yourself, working to change things you want, increasing your self-esteem and for self-care.

Our past and present are intimately linked by our memories. Our memories are heavily influenced and based on feelings we had surrounding an event or experience. These experiences may be impacting your life right now, even the ones that might seem irrelevant or insignificant. If we don't become aware of this connection it will keep affecting our future, which over time can cause us stress. Prolonged stress can manifest itself in physical forms, including illness, lack of energy, problems with sleep, headaches, depression and anxiety . When you are mentally healthy you are able to handle life's challenges.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
