Adoption Counselling in Manchester
I work with a wide range of people but have a particular interest in identity, adoption (being an adoptive parent myself), relationships and the ways we learn to adapt to the systems and families we grow up in.
Hi, I’m Carwyn and I offer face-to-face and online psychotherapy and counselling services in Chorlton, South Manchester.
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons, whether it’s to help with depression or anxiety, a sense of feeling lost, identity exploration, relationships or just seeking to change something about themselves.
Psychotherapy offers a confidential, steady space to slow down, listen closely to yourself, and make sense of what has shaped you — so that new ways of living and relating can become possible. I offer a warm, safe and non-judgemental space to support you with these matters.

We accumulate ways of being in the world that supported us in the past but, perhaps, don’t serve us now. This may be held in our bodies, thoughts, emotions, and the way that we relate to ourself and others. Therapy is a process of exploring this together with a balance of safety and challenge. I have experienced personally and with others how this can facilitate deepening self awareness, processing old wounds, and living more authentically. I am warm and openminded, and I am committed to being honest because I believe that it is paramount to enabling trust to develop. I meet you as my genuine self, rather than in ‘role’.

You may look strong on the outside, but inside you feel overwhelmed, anxious or emotionally exhausted. Perhaps you’re carrying grief, navigating the impact of domestic abuse, rebuilding your self-esteem, or trying to stay steady as a single parent. You overthink, doubt yourself, or feel stuck in patterns you don’t fully understand. You want clarity, peace and confidence. You want to stop surviving and start feeling secure, grounded and more in control of your life and relationships.

I am an HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist based in Manchester. I provide a safe, non-judgemental space for clients who are finding life difficult to navigate, feeling exhausted, disconnected, stuck, overwhelmed or finding themselves not able to do the things they used to love to do. Rooted in a person-centred, integrative approach, I draw on attachment theory, guided drawing, and grounding skills. I believe art therapy is a powerful, evidence-based way to heal when talking therapies haven’t felt enough, supporting clients to create, connect, and heal from within. Art therapy can offer ways to turn the volume down on thoughts.

There are many reasons why someone might seek therapy. You could be a stage in your life where you are confused about who you really are and what to do next. You may be haunted by old traumas or facing new challenges. It may be that you are experiencing relationship or family issues, there may be problems at work. You may be going through grief and loss, or facing illness or disability. Any of this could leave you feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed or burnt out. Alternatively, you may not know why you are struggling with your mental health. I provide a calm, warm, supportive presence to help you figure it all out.

Let’s be real: figuring out life can be exhausting. Maybe you’re doing "fine" on paper, but inside, you’re constantly overthinking, feeling "stuck," or just tired of trying to meet everyone else’s expectations.
If you’re looking for a space where you can finally take off the mask and just be, I’m glad you’re here.
As an Integrative Counsellor, I don’t believe in "one size fits all" therapy. You’re a unique human, so our sessions will be too. We’ll talk like real people—no clinical jargon, just honest conversation. Whether you’re navigating a big life change or trying to quiet that inner critic.

It is entirely normal, in life, to feel confused, upset, anxious, unsure or challenged; these are all feelings that show that we are human. I provide you with the tools to use if life feels overwhelming, or when you want to make further improvements or understand yourself better. Psychotherapy is for anyone and everyone and is as normal a part of self-care as exercise or getting a haircut. It is an opportunity to do what is essential but that too often is overlooked: allowing ourselves the space to understand ourselves better. Seeking support through psychotherapy can help to deepen self-awareness around life’s tensions.

Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioural or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioural, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
