I like working with individuals and couples – on issues and worries ranging from anxiety, stress, and depression to all types of trauma. Of particular interest is working with people experiencing existential angst or simply feeling "stuck" in one way or another. I like to help people to get "un-stuck" and to take steps towards living their lives in more fulfilling ways, and having healthier, more rewarding relationships.

Self-criticism can feel like it’s on a painful, repeating loop. You might find you are telling yourself that you are not good enough, or boring, ugly or fat. Far from motivating you, it’s my belief that punishing yourself in this way actually limits your choices and actions and keeps you stuck. Quite simply, talking to yourself in a mean way doesn’t get you anywhere. Talking to another person, and opening up about this habit can really help.

With my brother diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia nearly 30 years ago, I have personal experience of the family sacrifices and struggles related to the pain and stigma of mental illness. Having since, committing my life to the improvement of people’s emotional fitness and mental resilience, with support from organisations such as SANE and MIND, my own journey has allowed me to discover the true benefits of therapy first-hand. Personal therapy is proving invaluable for people to manage certain difficult or crisis situations in their lives and so transform their problems into major opportunities for personal growth.

I often tell my clients (and remind myself!) that uncertainty, loss, and worry - are all parts of being human. Yet, sometimes, it all may become overwhelming. What used to help, no longer does, and we end up feeling stuck in a pattern. We might struggle in relationships, at work, and more. Therapy can help you make sense of it all, to find clarity. As your therapist, I will support you to carefully and safely unpack any difficulties you might be facing. We will work together to understand all those parts of you, that make you who you are. We will do so with curiosity, honesty, and a sense of humour (where appropriate, of course).

There is hope even if your brain tells you there isn't, and it is my job as a counsellor to help you see it. It is usually buried somewhere under layers of shame, self-criticism and feeling not good enough. We will work together to help you feel a deeper sense of fulfilment and control over your life. With the right support and tools, you can overcome challenges and lead a more balanced and satisfying life, even if now it seems impossible.

I am proudly a combination of Autistic and ADHD. AuDHD has a nice ring to it. I draw on 14 years of experience in private practice as well as lived experience of being neurodivergent. I specialise in working with sensitive souls, Autism, ADHD. I work with clients who fall into what used to be the Asperger category of Autism. Although these people are considered to be high functioning, I am careful using this term. It can cover up the deep seated struggles under the facade of “doing well”.

I offer face-to-face, telephone & online support with a range of issues such as relationship struggles, anxiety, depression and low mood, low self-esteem, big life changes, loss & bereavement, stress, work-life balance, trauma - to name a few. I also offer therapy sessions outside where we can talk whilst walking in nearby natural spaces. My core training is in Transactional Analysis psychotherapy, which provides practical approaches to understanding ourselves in relation to the situations we find ourselves in, so there is some emphasis on self-exploration. I take a flexible approach and welcome difference in its many forms.

TL;DR I mostly work with people dealing with anxiety, depression, and/or OCD stuff/intrusive thoughts, to better understand what's happening and find ways to improve things. I continue to learn to better support the people I work with, particularly around gender, sexuality and relationship diversity, and neurodiversity.

I'm Gemma. I'm a clinical psychologist with a passion for working with families and wider systems around people. I work with couples, and parents who are struggling with the behaviour of their children, particularly aggression or other risky behaviours. I also work with couples who are experiencing significant levels of conflict and harmful or abusive behaviour. Sometimes, my work is with parents who have separated and are trying to work out how to reduce the impact of this separation on their children, or repair or reconstruct relationships that have become strained or distant.

Are you struggling with anxiety due to loss, relationships, work or coming to terms with episodes from your past? Maybe you want to explore why you behave, think or feel as you do, which can lead to positive change or self-acceptance. Have you kept worries to yourself for a while, not sleeping and not sharing how you really feel because you’re frightened that people won’t understand or that you’ll be a burden?

Life gives us a lot of opportunities to learn to cope with our problems. But it doesn’t give us a lot of opportunities to genuinely try and heal from them. I can’t claim to have the answer to every problem, but I want to take an approach to mental health – your mental health – which thinks about healing, growth and change. While I have years of experience working with a broad range of diagnoses, I think these labels can take away from an actual person and their actual problems. I want to learn about you as a person and work out what a solution looks like for you.

Find your peace of mind. Workshop compassion (8 weeks to train your brain to be more compassionate). Life is not always easy. We can experiment difficulties, stressful events, and distressing or traumatic experiences. This can plunge us into questions, fears, stress, panic, or intense emotional distress and distance us from ourselves, our balance, and our general well-being. Being compassionate can help you to deal with the challenges of life and be more resilient.

I work with people from all walks and with many issues but all feel a need to change something in their lives. I can create a safe space to explore and understand the problems you bring, both individually or together with partners. I have helped many clients deal with the issues arising from depression, self doubt, anxiety and trauma, or changing notions of self worth, especially in the face of work stress.

I offer a safe space to talk about the things that are getting in the way of you reaching your potential. My goal is to equip you to become your own therapist, so that you can continue your journey of development beyond completing a course of therapy with me.
