Making the decision to reach out and admit that you need the help of someone else can be hard. Making the decision to attend counselling can be even harder. Partners, peers and family may not understand, you may feel like you've failed somehow, you may feel like you are not enough. We also know that this is far from the truth. Taking the step to attend counselling is often the first step on a journey that allows us to confront our difficulties, face our fears , become more self-aware and ultimately take a path that can lead to a better life.

I have worked with clients who have had a range of issues such as  anxiety , depression, self esteem difficulties, work related stress, issues in relation to gender and sexuality alongside clients who have experienced childhood trauma and loss and grief.
I have a passion for working with people whilst creating a safe environment to help clients to process and understand their feelings. I do not view myself as the expert in the therapeutic relationship as I believe that with the right support and therapeutic relationship, the client can understand their difficulties and find their own solutions to the difficulties they are facing.

My experience includes working and healing with those who are depressed or have anxiety issues that are a result of relationship difficulties, work related stress, bereavement, sexual abuse, traumas, post-traumatic stress, cancer and other health related issues.
I am a registered Person-Centered and Integrative Counsellor. I have worked with Individuals, couples and families for over 10 years, in Canada, Hong Kong and UK. I am always excited to see my clients being fully transformed within two months and they often see my therapy for them as a life changing experience. My recent practice has a trauma informed element when needed. I work with Guided Imagery to help my clients to gain insights of why they may be triggered in the now which might limit them. I also help my clients to access their inner child to see how learned behaviors or negative thoughts that may be affecting them.

trauma, PTSD, anxiety and abuse.
I started my counselling training over 12 years ago and have years of experience working with people who are striving to understand themselves and these complicated lives that we are all living. I will never get over how much courage it takes to reach out for help at a time of crisis and I am always blown away at the strength and resilience of the human mind. I believe that we all have the potential to grow & heal and that counselling works to facilitate this process. Counselling is for everyone. Not just those who may consider themselves to be in an extreme crisis. I treat each client as an individual working with your unique needs

Do you feel overwhelmed? Stuck? Overly anxious? Looking for a healthier work/life balance? I work with individuals on a whole range of different issues, from anxiety , feelings of low mood, stress, to relationship issues, bullying and unhealthy patterns of behaviour, for example. People turn to therapy, usually, when they find that they are stuck: either not knowing what to do next, or how to get out of unhelpful repetitive situations.

Are you struggling with anxiety due to loss, relationships, work or coming to terms with episodes from your past? Maybe you want to explore why you behave, think or feel as you do, which can lead to positive change or self-acceptance. Have you kept worries to yourself for a while, not sleeping and not sharing how you really feel because you’re frightened that people won’t understand or that you’ll be a burden?

I believe that the therapist and client come together as a team to work through issues that may stand in the way of you reaching your potential. Through my training, I have mainly used Transactional Analysis, but also have some experience working in a solution-focussed way and like to work integratively as each person is an individual who may like to work in a different way. I work with people on a range of issues, but find that I work with people with anxiety or depression most commonly, and pride myself on working hard to make people feel at ease.

I work with people who are feeling stuck and looking for help to move forward. This could be around difficulty dealing with emotions, self-destructive behaviours, self-criticism or feelings of not being good enough. It could be being held back in life by anxiety , distressing thoughts or compulsive behaviours. It could involve uncertainty around questions of self-identity, relationships or life direction, or just a sense that things aren’t right. Whether these issues are recent or more long-standing, change for the better is possible and therapy can help.

Sometimes life throws us challenges both through past and present experiences, which knock us off our feet and we become engulfed in uncertainty, worry and fear. It could be that we start to doubt ourselves and feel that we are not good enough or we are unable to cope, leading to anxiety and depression. Whatever you are going through, it deserves care, attention and compassion and I believe that you have the inner wisdom to work through these issues as you are the person that knows yourself better than anyone,

Our past and present are intimately linked by our memories. Our memories are heavily influenced and based on feelings we had surrounding an event or experience. These experiences may be impacting your life right now, even the ones that might seem irrelevant or insignificant. If we don't become aware of this connection it will keep affecting our future, which over time can cause us stress. Prolonged stress can manifest itself in physical forms, including illness, lack of energy, problems with sleep, headaches, depression and anxiety . When you are mentally healthy you are able to handle life's challenges.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
