I specialise in anxiety,
depression
and men's related issues such as barriers to intimacy and relationship challenges. In psychotherapy sessions I provide a confidential setting that encourages you to reflect on your journey. We will explore the feelings, emotions and impact significant events have had on the way you experience day-to-day life. We will work through your thought process moving towards the version of you that you've always wanted to be. Who is that person? Are they confident in themselves? And most importantly, do they allow themselves to smile, laugh and be happy?

At certain points in our lives, we might find ourselves in what may seem like an unbreakable cycle of self-destructive behaviours, overwhelming emotions and a sense of disconnect to those around us, or perhaps even within ourselves. If you’re reading this, it is likely that you currently find yourself somewhere within that cycle or you may have feelings of anxiety,
depression
or low self-worth. You may be experiencing relationship difficulties, intrusive and obsessive thoughts, self-harm, child-hood trauma or grief. Whatever the reason may be, I just want to firstly remind you that you are not alone.

Our mental health and wellbeing are paramount to us. It saddens me to sometimes to see what little care we take of it. We see our GP’s as soon as we have a physical ailment. However, tend to ignore how we feel emotionally, forgetting our emotional wellbeing is part of our whole-making. It has been my life long passion to encourage people to put themselves first and follow their dreams. I am a great believer in the power of our mind and what we can achieve if we dare to. We all experience some form of distress in our lives. We feel sad, angry, lonely,
depressed
, anxious, stressed, grief or even feeling that we cant always explain.

Life is difficult. Every day you face a thousand intangible threats to your mental well-being and self-esteem. Your brain reacts, creating a collection of sensations which we call anxiety. Sometimes you feel hopeless-there's no way out of trouble and you feel yourself becoming more withdrawn, isolated and
depressed
. Or, perhaps living with the person you love is impossible. Talking things over with family or friends can help. But you may have reasons why that's not appropriate or you need specific specialist help. Then is the time to speak with an impartial, trained, professional, in confidence.

depression
, anxiety, loss, or bereavement; or whether you’re struggling to change things that are causing problems in your life, such as setting boundaries, communicating yourself, addictions, or disordered eating patterns, I offer a range of counselling and psychotherapy services that can help you work through this distress. I work with people with a broad spectrum of presenting issues, from
depression
and anxiety to domestic abuse, bereavement, addiction and sexuality.
Although I regularly work with clients of all ages and genders, the majority of my clients tend to be young men, who have unresolved feelings or experiences which are impacting on their daily lives. I work as an integrative counsellor, from a person-centred perspective. This means that you can bring whatever you wish to the session, while we work at your pace and depth. I employ theory and techniques from CBT, psychodynamic and other therapeutic philosophies which I feel may be useful. Where we start is not the important thing as ultimately, you will naturally discover the things that matter the most to you.

I have expertise in and I am certified in the clinical treatment of clients who present with complex psychological trauma. This Easter you have resigned yourself to eating too many mini eggs and bingeing Luther on Netflix whilst ignoring your existential dread. You pour another glass of wine and wonder where it went wrong. Wasn’t being an adult supposed to feel freeing? Instead you feel empty, confused and embarrassingly, rather lonely. You try and put yourself out there, but a string of pointless dates with emotionally unavailable men are not doing it for you. Your flatmates are all loved up and it feels like your twenties are slipping through your fingers. But you know better than to expect emotional support from your family; that's not what they do.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
