My approach in sessions is centred on you, focusing on the here and now, current situations and difficulties you are experiencing. How you are feeling and behaving at present is often linked to past experiences which remain unresolved and continue to impact on your health and well-being today. Our sessions are based on respect, compassion, empathy and honesty. I will support you in exploring your reasons for wanting therapy, within a non-judgmental environment. By creating a safe, open and genuine relationship with you, we can together find ways to deal with the difficulties you are experiencing. The age range I work with is 18+.

Hello I'm Emma, an Integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, offering online and face to face weekly sessions from a garden room. Experiencing myself how therapy supports the most difficult times in life, I come alongside you, and together we can take the steps which are most important to you. Whether it's the pain of grief, loss, trauma, anxiety, depression or you just feel lost or in a rut. Stuck in a cycle of unhealthy relationships, or patterns of behaviour that you want to change. I believe there are times we all need support to understand ourselves and look at how we perceive a changing world and where we fit into it.

Hi, my name is Danielle Bennett, I'm an individual counsellor, a couple therapist and a sex therapist. I have been working in this field for over 25 years. I started my training, working for the NHS as a sex-therapist and I worked in the NHS for over 7 years. I then worked privately for a number of years and for the last nine years I worked for Relate as a sex therapist; couple counsellor and trainer. I can help with all aspects of relationships and sexual issues as well as looking at more particular issues with individuals.

I also work with people struggling with anxiety, depression, intimacy, sexual issues or sexual compulsion (addiction). I work in a systemic, psycho-dynamic way using a wide variety of techniques to suit each individual and specific situation. Are you experiencing relationship issues? Do you repeat the same patterns over and over again, often ending up in conflict? Do you find it difficult to express your emotions and feelings? Is attachment or trust an issue for you? Do you have issues around intimacy and sex?

I offer longer-term counselling for adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or affected by past experiences, and want to understand themselves more deeply. My way of working is grounded in the belief that healing happens in relationship. I work relationally and authentically, meeting you where you are. Many people come feeling anxious, low, or noticing repeating patterns, particularly in relationships. Together, we can explore these experiences, make sense of patterns, and help you feel more connected and able to move forward.

Changes often take time and effort. As you read this, you may be confused, overwhelmed, feeling stuck or have difficulty finding direction to go as you are going through a major transition in your life. Being 'between' different life stages, countries and cultures, jobs and education, different family roles can be a struggle and it takes a lot of energy to carry on moving forward. You may be needing somewhere safe to stop, have your breath back and examine what is happening around and inside of you so that you can recalibrate yourself and start moving on.

I work in private practice and in Secondary schools with many mental health issues such as anxiety, self-harm, low mood, gender dysphoria, self-esteem and confidence. In this difficult world, especially after lockdown, there are so many teenagers struggling emotionally and it is affecting confidence, friendships, family life and school. They want to understand how to understand and manage these emotions in order to be able to process them and move forward. I also work with SEND young people, struggling to understand themselves and why they may struggle emotionally.

You don’t need to have it all worked out, or even know what’s going on. If life feels like it should be different but you’re not sure how, this is a great starting point. You might feel alone carrying whatever it is - untangible, anxious, ashamed, or stuck in repeating patterns that leave you frustrated or disconnected. Some carry the impact of early life trauma or have learned to hide parts of themselves just to get by. You might be questioning your identity, struggling with intimacy, feeling disconnected from your body, or wanting to explore your relationship style, including non-traditional setups.

My work is informed by existential philosophy, phenomenology, critical thinking (Marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism, queer theory, post-colonialism), artistic movements (surrealism, symbolism, dada), and the inspiration they provide for understanding everyday life struggles.
As an LGBTQAI+ individual do you feel that you can’t find your own place, or are you unhappy with where you are in your life? Maybe you are feeling misunderstood, unable to connect with others, or simply struggling with the dating scene or the community? Sometimes having a gender/sexual identity comes with pressures to conform to a specific body image, to femininity/masculinity ideals, and with certain sexual expectations that don’t mirror your own preferences or needs. Or perhaps there’s something important about yourself that has been lost?

Are you LGBTQ+ and need to talk through your dysphoria, or sexuality and how you feel about yourself?
I work online, specialising in working with neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ folk. As a non-binary ADHDer, I have my own lived experience. Of course, this doesn't make me the expert! But, I can help you understand why you think and feel the way you do, by asking the right questions and thinking outside of the box.

I find I work well with clients navigating complex experiences such as intense anxiety, mood instability, trauma, psychosis, or overwhelming emotional experiences. Clients I work alongside often feel misunderstood, stuck or disconnected, and want to make sense of what’s happening inside and around them. Their goals might include seeking relief from distressing symptoms, understanding themselves better, or building a more meaningful life. Many want to process past experiences safely and begin to trust themselves and others again. They’re often seeking a skilled, genuine and compassionate therapist who can support them.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors
Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
