Domestic Abuse Counselling in Malton
Over the last 15 years I have worked with adults and young people bereaved, those impacted by domestic abuse and in crisis.
Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem? You aren't alone. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, right? Whether you're carrying the weight of daily pressures, navigating significant changes, or sensing that something important is missing, it’s natural to feel off-balance and uncertain. Perhaps past experiences may also be resurfacing, adding to the complexity of your emotions and making it difficult to manage the tornado of feelings. In these moments, it’s okay to reach out and explore what you truly need.

Life can feel overwhelming at times. You may be struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, stress, low self-worth, relationship difficulties, grief, or simply feeling like life has become harder than it used to be. Perhaps you're exhausted from holding everything together, putting everyone else's needs first, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer feel helpful. Sometimes there isn’t one clear problem, just a sense that life feels heavy, confusing, or not how you want it to be. I offer a calm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly, feel understood, and begin making sense of things

Counselling is an opportunity to be heard, to share with a trained person some of the difficulties that you encounter and to be supported to make positive changes to your life. I work in a respectful, empathic, understanding and compassionate way, providing a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences. By reflecting on these experiences you can learn new ways of doing things and progress past what you feel is holding you back or causing you difficulty. I currently work from a comfortable and private space that is used solely for client sessions, online via video call or outdoors.

Life can be hard at times. We can experience loss, changes in our health, family circumstances or work life. Maybe our relationships are not fulfilling our needs and we do not know how to change things. At times, we don’t feel good about ourselves, we lose confidence in our ability to cope with life or maybe we feel impacted by past experiences or held back through feelings of anger, shame or guilt. Sometimes we don’t know what’s wrong, but we just know something isn’t right. I can help you explore what is going on for you by giving you a supportive space to talk and be heard.

I support children and families when things feel overwhelming or in crisis. My practice is transparent and collaborative, helping families work together. With a background in SEND Education and as a parent of two autistic children, I understand that the process needs to be as stress-free as possible. Play and creative arts helps children with a sensory grounding—especially supportive for neurodiverse, traumatised, or looked after/adopted children.

Are you feeling stuck, unheard, unworthy? Are you living your best life, or is something holding you back? Life is challenging at times. Many things can trigger our internal critic, making us believe we are 'less than’ or are failing. We dwell in the past, worrying about mistakes, reliving painful events, remembering unhealthy relationships. It can feel impossible to see a way forward. There are many human emotions - are yours feeling balanced, or are one or two overwhelming the others?

Having practised as a therapist for twenty years I have had the privilege to work with many creative, resilient, courageous and resourceful people. However, very few felt that way when they first came for therapy. Life can be challenging and we all struggle at times to cope with problems and stressful situations. Different people obviously find different things difficult but what everyone shares are the natural responses of feeling distressed, confused, anxious and lost. Psychotherapy can help you to express your feelings, work through anxiety and depression and develop positive responses to the challenges you are facing.

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
