Sometimes in life we can lose our way. Anxiety and depression or traumatic events can stop us from realising our potential. You may want to unpack destructive relationships, come to terms with grief and loss, or you might be unable to move forward with your life and cannot understand why. I am offering a safe, non-judgemental space to explore and understand those parts of life which cause pain and sorrow.

My ideal client would be someone who has become disillusioned with life, has suffered with a drop in self confidence or self esteem. Particularly those who are affected by relationship difficulties.

No one listening? Had enough? Finding it difficult to express yourself? There are times when life and relationships don't run smoothly, when we need support with time to talk and explore what is causing us to struggle. Perhaps it is anxiety or depression, maybe grief and bereavement, a life limiting illness, family issues, men's issues, relationship concerns, money worries, work and career problems, loneliness, life's transitional stages, fear about the future, of ageing and death. If you are finding it hard to deal with life's difficulties and want support, now might be just the right time to see what counselling can offer you.

At times it's not always clear why we feel the way we do, perhaps you're feeling overwhelmed or are engaging in patterns of behaviour which are negatively effecting your life, perhaps you're feeling angry, anxious, empty or depressed. The relationship we have with ourselves is crucial to our happiness and sense of fulfilment, it also dictates how we relate to other people and our loved ones. When we are not well connected to ourselves we can feel like nothing quite satisfies us, through therapy we aim to find a version of ourselves which we are happy with and better understand our emotions and emotional responses to those around us.

Are you a man feeling overwhelmed; struggling with work burnout, financial pressures, strained relationships, fatherhood, feelings of inadequacy, body image or low self esteem? The effort to hold it all together is causing stress, anxiety or depression so you might be coping with alcohol or substance abuse. Counselling provides a secure place to unpack these issues without judgement. Making sense of the pressures you're under can redefine what being a 'man' means to you and help you understand how you’re really doing. In counselling you can also develop practical tools to help manage stress, lessen the load and find some relief.

At times we may experience difficult emotions which we struggle to control. We may know why, or it may be a mystery to us. Wrestling with these feelings may give rise to anxiety or feeling withdrawn and low. We may also have long-standing difficulties, stemming from past experiences, that constrain our lives and compromise our relationships. Abuse, bullying and neglect can have a deep and lasting impact on our emotional wellbeing. These emotional difficulties can affect many aspects of life including sexuality, relationships, family, work, diet and physical health.

Is life getting you down? Do you feel listened to and supported? Are you struggling to like yourself? Do you sometimes feel you may be acting against your own best interests? Do you wonder why, so much of the time, you feel unable to bring about lasting change in the ways you relate to other people, and to life generally? I believe that early life experiences are critical to the person we become. Some of those early experiences will work to our good, whilst others may be at the root of why we find ourselves struggling, often without realising it. Self-awareness is key.

If you struggling to make sense of why your relationships are not working, and find repeated cycles of behaviour and emotions replaying in your relationships, and also with yourself, then I feel I can help you, and for you to reflect, explore, and make sense of your inner world. These are the deeper emotional wounds that have become embedded as coping strategies, that are often now maladaptive. I help clients from young to elderly; male, female or gender neutral. It could be from having difficulties with boundaries in life which you want to change to something as simple as wanting to reach a specific goal in life.

I have gained experience working in the field of trauma, anxiety and depression. I have training in somatic approaches as well as in creative psychotherapy that draws on my early experiences in sculpture and fine art. Those who would benefit most from me are those suffering from the long term impact of childhood trauma, anyone who wants help and support to manage stress, anyone who wants a safe compassionate space to explore how the past impacts the present and anyone who wishes to live a more content existence.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
