Since 2020, I have worked at First Steps ED and Green Lane Counselling and Psychotherapy, helping clients overcome concerns such as disordered eating, body image issues, anxiety, low mood, and low self esteem, relationship issues, and learning to live with life events like chronic illness or loss.
Sometimes life can be overwhelming and during these times we may develop patterns, thoughts and behaviours that can become unhelpful or tough to challenge.
Counselling and psychotherapy can help you explore and understand patterns that have emerged in your life and provides an opportunity to work through these. It can help to relieve pain, depression or anxiety, help you make decisions, make healthier choices, help you to work towards better relationships with those around you, or live a life according to what is important to you.

How do you prioritise self care when it doesn’t even make it onto the list most days? How do you retain your relationships and emotional connections with the people you love, when you can’t bring yourself to answer the phone for millionth time that day? I’m not a business coach. I’m a Psychotherapist in business, who has done the 4 years of weekly therapy, returns to therapy when I need to screw my head back on, in a world that continues to be organised chaos. People like us don’t go to therapy because we just don’t have the time. So flexibility, patience and straight talking therapists, like me, are necessary, for people like us.

Therapy can offer a space to slow down and begin to explore your experiences with the support of a trusted relationship. It is a place where you can speak freely, reflect, and be met with care and understanding.
There is no single “right” reason to start therapy - you might come with something specific, feel overwhelmed by several things at once, or simply sense that something in your life needs attention. Wherever you find yourself, we can begin there.

We can work together on: Times of grief, loss, or emotional overwhelm; Navigating anxiety, low mood, or trauma; Living with chronic illness or health challenges; Relationship shifts and family dynamics; Climate anxiety & ecological grief; Life transitions & identity changes; Growing into a life that feels rooted, resilient, and meaningful.
Are you carrying more than you let others see; grief that sits close to the surface, anxiety or anger that flares for reasons you don't understand, or the ache of feeling different, unseen, or out of step with the world.
Perhaps something in your life has shifted: a loss, an illness, a changing relationship, the unavailability of the coping tools that once kept you steady or a new awareness of how broken the world around you seems.
Many of the people I work with are used to holding everything together and keeping going, until they can’t. On the surface everything looks ok, but inside they’re exhausted.

Chronic Illness Counsellors
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
