Bereavement Counselling in Mackworth
Currently 18 Years in Practice. Being human is mostly hard and life can be cruel. We see it time and time again. Bad things happen to good people, and we suffer. Each and every one of us at some point in our lives, finds ourselves lost and stuck. We can get depressed, anxious, angry, defensive and frightened. We can often avoid the things that bring us pain and as time goes on that list gets longer and longer and our life can feel smaller and smaller. Reaching out for help can be the hardest first step, but it's also the bravest and will prove to be one of the best decisions you will make for yourself.

I work with individuals who feel disconnected from their authentic selves - perhaps you're feeling stuck, lacking direction, or missing purpose in your life. You might be struggling with past experiences that still affect you today, finding it hard to stay motivated, or feeling uncertain about your future path. Many of my clients initially believe they are the problem, carrying the weight of their struggles internally. If you recognise yourself in these words, know that you're not alone, and that what you're experiencing deserves to be heard and understood.

I specialise in grief work, whether it's the death of a loved one, loss of a relationship, self or financial security.
Are you feeling alone, unheard or misunderstood? Maybe you feel anxious, angry, or hurt. Do you feel as though no one is there for you or listens to how you are feeling? Maybe you have tried to speak to friends and family but they either just don't get it or tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing and the conversation shifts to their problems. When was the last time someone really sat with you and gave you their undivided attention to talk about how YOU are feeling? What would it feel like to truly be heard and understood? To be able to express how you feel without the worry of being judged or fear of upsetting someone?

If so, you are not alone, I find that when people may report feeling unseen, misunderstood, there may be feelings of awkwardness and disconnection with others and you may struggle to ask for what you want.

Maybe anxiety, trauma, grief, workplace stress, or messy relationship patterns are showing up at the worst times.
I help you make sense of past experiences that still feel loud in daily life. Using CBT, we explore the thoughts and patterns that keep you stuck, whether it’s anxiety, trauma, grief or workplace stress, and build tools you can actually use. I also support people through the messy parts of grief when others think you should have moved on.

We all experience loss and difficulties along the way but sometimes those things can feel unmanageable or overwhelming.
Depending on your needs and preferences we may work 'top-down', re-evaluating current coping strategies and enabling you to live more closely in line with your values. A 'bottom-up' approach tends to be more appropriate when working with trauma and involves establishing safety before encouraging closer connection to emotions and somatic sensations.

Bereavement Counsellors
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
