Not everyone has the same approach to life's problems such as personal and psychosexual relationships, grief, loss, bereavement, illness and stress, nor to the typical challenges of family relationships. The context of culture, ethnicity, race, gender, class, sexual orientation and spiritual beliefs influence the ways in which we view the world and how the world views us. I work with couples and families, children, teens and individuals, to resolve issues in a way that is sensitive to their culture and context; and together we develop solutions that are congruent with their values. I like to work from a strengths based orientation

Do you ever find yourself wondering why you react the way you do, struggle to trust, overthink relationships, or feel like you’re constantly trying to understand yourself?
Maybe you’ve experienced difficult relationships, trauma, rejection, or times where your needs didn’t feel understood. Maybe you’ve learned to people-please, mask, over-function, avoid conflict, or put everyone else first.
For many people, these patterns make sense when we explore your attachment style, past experiences and the ways you’ve learned to protect yourself.

How to explain what counselling is... If you're holding a cup of coffee and somebody accidentally bumps into you, you will most likely spill a drop or two, or depending on the bump impact a few spoonfuls or more. If there had been tea or something else in your cup, the result would be the same. Your emotions and feelings are like the coffee, because sometimes when life comes along and shakes you (which will happen to us all) whatever is inside your cup will spill out. Sometimes life can be easier until you get bumped.....but then you may need somebody to talk to, this is where counselling can help.

I understand that it can be hard to reach out for therapy, especially when you may be finding life tough at the moment. Or perhaps you are in a better place and have decided that you want to explore aspects of your life. Either way, please do contact me to discuss your needs. In therapy sessions I would work with you to process your past so that you can see how it impacts the present. For many there is the need to grieve for what has been lost, whilst giving the opportunity to identify and embrace your true inner self. You would strengthen ‘Adult’ you, freeing yourself to embrace life.

I have supported many clients and colleagues over the years with their wellbeing and mental health, along with having my own past lived experience. If you’re feeling disconnected due to depression, overwhelmed by anxiety, struggling with late-diagnosed ADHD/ Autism, or are in need of couples counselling with your partner, my sessions are adapted to your unique needs.
Hello! I’m Leanne, a Psychodynamically trained counsellor based in the High Peak.
I believe true healing begins when we allow ourselves to verbalise and truly feel our emotions. So much of modern society works to keep us distracted and out of touch with ourselves and those around us. My approach is designed to help you connect with the overlooked parts of yourself - past and present, without judgment and at your own pace. With warmth and empathy, I have created a space for you to show up, just as you are.

I have helped people manage workplace stress, sort out who they are, explore coming out as gay, bi or trans, grieve for their parents and partners and pets, work their way through anger and frustration, and address addictive behaviours.
Whether you’re dealing with anger, anxiety, bereavement, depression, estrangement, family issues, identity, loneliness, menopause, mortality, powerlessness, relationships, or simply want to talk things through, I offer a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore what you’re feeling, and how you can manage it.
We’re all different and we all need to find our own way. I can help you do that. The world throws a lot at us, and expects a lot of us. And, very often, we expect a lot of ourselves too. For many of us, it can help to talk through what we’re dealing with, to help us understand what’s going on and find a way forward.

FAQ - Marriage Counselling
What issues does marriage counselling help with?
Marriage counselling can address common relationship concerns, including ongoing conflict, communication challenges, emotional distance, or difficulty making decisions together. It may also be helpful for couples who are not currently experiencing major problems but want to prepare for future life changes. For more specific concerns affecting one individual in the relationship, such as trauma, depression, or significant substance use concerns, individual therapy may be more appropriate than marriage counselling.
When is the right time to start marriage counselling?
There is no single “right” time to start marriage counselling, but certain signs may suggest that counselling could be helpful. For example, a couple may benefit from counselling if many conversations end in conflict, if negative interactions are becoming more frequent, or if relationship stress is affecting other areas of life, such as sleep, work, parenting, or friendships. Some couples also seek counselling proactively. Premarital counselling, for instance, allows couples to discuss communication styles, finances, family dynamics, and future goals before getting married. Other couples may start counselling before a major life change, such as becoming parents, relocating, or navigating a stressful career transition.
Is marriage counselling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Marriage counselling may still help even if one partner is more hesitant to attend, as long as both people are ultimately willing to participate in sessions. Once counselling is underway, the more hesitant partner may become more open to sessions that can strengthen the relationship and build coping skills and communication strategies. If one partner refuses to attend, individual therapy may still help the other partner understand their needs, set boundaries, and decide how to approach the relationship.
Is online marriage counselling as effective as in-person?
There are differing opinions on the best format for marriage counselling. While some studies show that online marriage counselling can be as effective as in-person counselling, some argue that in-person counselling is more effective because it allows the therapist to better pick up on context and body language cues. In addition, in-person counselling may be a better fit for couples who are working through high-conflict issues. Ultimately, the “best” format depends on the couple’s specific needs and concerns.
What is faith-based marriage counselling and how is it different?
Faith-based marriage counselling incorporates a couple’s religious or spiritual beliefs into counselling. It may be a good fit for couples who want to discuss their relationship, values, and marriage within the context of their faith. For example, Christian marriage counselling may appeal to couples who want a counsellor familiar with Christian beliefs about marriage. Other forms of faith-based counselling may incorporate Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or other religious perspectives into sessions.
How much does marriage counselling cost and is it covered by insurance?
Marriage counselling is usually paid for privately in Great Britain, rather than through the NHS, and sessions often cost around £60 to £120 or more. Fees depend on location, with costs generally higher in the London area, as well as counsellor experience, session length, and practice setting. However, lower-cost options may be available through sliding scale fees, which adjust the cost of counselling based on income, as well as through community clinics or non-profit organisations that offer reduced-cost services.
