Hello, I'm Rachael. I provide a safe, secure place, where you will be able to talk about your thoughts and feelings in confidence, without the fear of being judged. I know the thought of having counselling can be daunting, but I will help you to feel comfortable and relaxed. All my clients and their issues are extremely important to me, so there is no such thing as a client or an issue being ‘unimportant,’ or a problem being too ‘minor’. The sessions are all about you...

My ideal clients are adults and couples who find themselves repeating patterns in relationships that no longer serve them. They may struggle with attachment anxiety, low self-worth, trust issues, shame, people pleasing, or the lasting impact of childhood or relationship trauma. Many have tried therapy before and understand their patterns intellectually, yet still feel stuck. I help clients understand why these patterns developed, how they are affecting life today, and what can be done to change them. Together, we work with both insight and practical strategies so they can build healthier relationships and feel more secure

My name is Naomi, and I offer warm, reflective counselling for adults navigating grief, loss, burnout, life transitions and workplace stress. I came to counselling through my own significant life transitions, and after more than 20 years working in professional environments — including a decade supporting staff through change and welfare concerns. That background shapes everything about how I work. I understand what it feels like to hold it all together on the outside while struggling underneath, and I bring both professional experience and genuine personal empathy to the room.

I work with both couples and individuals who are finding things difficult, and feeling disconnected, or stuck. Whether that’s within a long-term relationship, a relationship in crisis, or in your own inner world. I support individuals with various challenges including anxiety, depression, burnout, stress, low self-esteem, ADHD, sexual trauma, work-related difficulties, and relationship issues. Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to move forward; others arrive with a clearer focus on what they’d like to change, whether that’s within a relationship or within themselves.

The personal past and daily life can hinder us in feeling fulfilled, of living with meaning and purpose. Problems with relationships, finding yourself feeling stuck, trapped, overwhelmed...What can help you get the kind of life you want? We establish what you hope for and what's getting in the way. Then, we find the paths that take you where you want to go. It's a partnership in curiosity and investigation; a time to experiment with new ways of living, and throw out old ways that no longer serve you. There's no set agenda: change manifests in your time, your own way.

Often, the reasons given to me for arriving to therapy are feature one or more of the following: anxiety, depression, sadness, self confidence, life changing illnesses, self identity, early childhood, past or present relationships, bereavements, traumatic experiences, injury and mental health diagnosis. How these issues and difficult feelings manifest in people's lives are unique and so 'reasons' may be identified as problems or difficulties with: addictions; work; intimate or family relationships; children and parenting; personal or spiritual identity, or something existential. Therapy offers to solute and salve these issues.

I value working deeply and curiously to untangle challenges in people's experiences. So often we are stuck in relationships or in situations that don't serve us. However, with support, we can find out about where these issues originate and how to move forward with compassion. I work with attachment theory to unpick relational patterns and look at reactions and choices we make in life. I work with clients' Parts to begin to understand their inner world and build new ways of communicating, growing self-esteem and confidence. I love working with clients from a base of an authentic and trusting relationship on a medium/long-term basis.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
