I practiced at Mind for 3 years and for a local organisation with male survivors of sexual abuse for 6 years.
I am an accredited, registered and insured counsellor and psychotherapist and provide a warm, non judgemental and grounded presence, in a respectful and confidential space. As a humanistic and integrative therapist, I recognise your individuality in a holistic and positive sense, together with your potential for change. I also see how acknowledging pain or difficulties in the past allows repair in the present. With exploration and understanding, this can lead to greater personal and interpersonal awareness and functioning. Enabling this, I have strong belief in the trusting therapeutic relationship we can create.

Whatever brings you through the door, seeking to change or feel better, you no longer need to face your problems alone. It takes courage to look at ourselves and to sit with the myriad emotions and situations that have constructed the person that we are today: the hardest part is the first step, acknowledging the problem and seeking help. Life can become too much sometimes. Maybe you’ve tried to carry on as normal, pushing things down or telling yourself “others have it worse.” But the truth is, if something is hurting you, it matters. I work with people who want to understand themselves better, especially how their early life or relationships have shaped how they show up in the world today. Perhaps you’ve reached a point where you’re asking, “Why do I feel like this?” or “Why does it keep happening?”—and you’re ready to find out.

The struggles of day to day life can take its toll on our emotional & physical well-being. When we are stressed, anxious, depressed or having difficulty in expressing ourselves to others, then just getting through a day can feel like an impossible task.

A lot of my work focuses on helping people heal from trauma, especially sexual abuse, and the many ways it can affect daily life, relationships, and self-worth by drawing from several approaches to create a safe, grounded space for reflection and growth.
My approach is collaborative and adaptable, creating a safe, inclusive space for reflection and growth. I utilise a mix of Compassion Focussed Therapy, CBT, Person-Centred, and Attachment Theory to create a unique combination to suit your needs; but please don't worry if you aren't familiar with these terms. We can explore this together.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
