I know that trying to find a therapist can feel like a daunting experience, especially for parents, you have limited time, limited capacity to juggle one more thing, but you feel like you need the support. I offer therapy for those who have experienced trauma or distress during any part of the perinatal period: trying to conceive, pregnancy , birth or in parenthood. I have a passion for supporting those who have been through neonatal care or hospitalisation with their babies. Maybe you are experiencing high levels of anxiety since becoming a parent, issues with your identity or struggling to process what happened to you...

I have extra experience and training in working with clients with issues related to pregnancy , fertility, childbirth and post-partum, but welcome all adult clients regardless of gender, religion, culture or sexuality.
My name is Hayley and I am a fully qualified and insured counsellor. I am based in Milton Keynes and also work online with clients nationwide via Zoom. I work integratively, with a person-centred foundation. This means that I have trained in and may use elements from several different psychotherapeutic models, as I don't believe one size fits all in therapy. With me, the therapy is designed to fit around you as an individual, not the other way around. Your feedback is always welcome. I believe that the relationship between my client and me is the most important aspect of therapy and I value your ability to make your own decisions.

Being emotionally knocked by a health condition, pregnancy , parenting or work stress is entirely normal, but can feel isolating and distressing. I work with clients undergoing physical health investigations, people experiencing a range of difficulties around the perinatal period and clients experiencing work-related stressors, to help them navigate their own way through these tough times. This includes, for example; support in managing uncertainty whilst undergoing health investigations, building confidence around birth or parenting, guidance through difficulties at work and trauma processing.

I have an interest in perinatal mental health, neonatal experiences, anxiety and depression.
Life can be amazing, but it can also come with its own set of challenges. Especially at the moment with everything going on in the world. It's quite understandable to feel overwhelmed with many different emotions. Whatever our reason for going to counselling it’s about having someone to listen, to our fears, anxieties, losses, our hopes, and joys.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
