Perhaps you are currently dealing with sadness in your life, challenging ongoing feelings or experiences; maybe feeling overwhelmed? You might have a new personal issue or difficulty that has occurred for you, or you could be battling historical events and may have consequently been feeling this way for a very long time. The decision to make contact with a counsellor or psychotherapist can be a very challenging one, and takes great courage, especially if it's the first time.

I’m Dr. Bavister (call me Catherine), a Clinical Psychologist with the HCPC. If you’re looking for some help with your mood, behaviours, relationships, then psychological therapy may be a good fit for you. In therapy, I aim to offer a friendly, nonjudgemental space, where we can get stuck in to understanding how you tick, to work through the problems you bring. You might have a clear idea of what you want, but I otherwise draw on various therapy approaches to personalise strategies so you can do what works for you, to make the changes you need.

Are you experiencing difficult thoughts and feelings such as anxiety, depression, anger and/or sadness? Do you perhaps find it hard to talk about what is going on for you with people around you including your loved ones? You may be noticing that the way you are coping is not helping you to feel better in the long term. I strongly believe that everyone deserves a chance to learn how to manage difficult things that are going on for them, and to move forward to a place where they can feel positive and their mind is at ease. I can work with you collaboratively, and help you to achieve your goals.

I will endeavour to help you with the difficulties you experience. Whether you are experiencing alcohol and/or drugs becoming problematic, or the impact of surviving adult/child abuse, or living with depression and anxiety or, as a veteran, endeavouring to cope with bad memories, or perhaps just feeling lost and aimless after children leave home or reaching a crossroads in your home or working life. I will support your personal journey towards exploring and discovering inner strengths and abilities, so you feel more confident, empowered and able to move forward.

Finding a therapist starts with you and your needs. You may arrive with a sense of overwhelm, loss or anxiety, perhaps desiring change but without knowing how or believing you can. We can work together to explore how you feel, think and behave, and find a way to bring you back to your authentic self. I am able to work with adults and older teenagers (16+), as well as those training to be Psychotherapists themselves, and have a broad experience of short and long term work, presenting issues and ages, diagnoses and personalities.

Hello, my name is Victoria. It can be difficult to take the first brave step towards seeking counselling, especially when confronted with frightening and overwhelming feelings from the past or present. Do you feel as if no one sees or hears you, or are you overwhelmed by experiences and emotions you don't understand? Is the critical inner voice overly loud at times? This may be a difficult place to be, especially if you feel alone. You do not have to feel isolated and lost; it is more comfortable to be beside someone when things are challenging.

Many of my clients have previously seen a lot of mental health professionals and are still struggling to cope with their ongoing psychologically symptoms. They have never dared hope that a “normal” life is possible without having to be constrained by the constant chatter in their head. They have put up with many toxic relationships work issues and family issues all in the belief that this is as good as it gets for them. To be able to be in control and manage their psychological symptoms in all situations is the goal of most of my patients which enables them to lead their best life.

I understand how difficult it can be to decide to seek help. This is why I offer a no cost first session to see if you can feel comfortable with me. I am very experienced and approachable and I have helped many people get through difficult times. Anxiety can feel overwhelming. It can lead to physical symptoms of panic, nervous tension, sweating and breathlessness and it can be difficult to think clearly. "What-if" thinking takes over and negativity sets in. I can help you break out of this cycle of doubt by working on restoring your coping skills.

It’s scary admitting to yourself that you need help; and that you’re struggling with whatever is causing you to feel unhappy or distressed. Due to stigma; people feel that they can only access therapy when they are at breaking point; when in fact you can access counselling whenever you need to. My background is in working with abuse survivors; adults and children; and those who have experienced trauma. As a result I work with depression, low self esteem, shame, loneliness, hopelessness, grief & loss, anger, self harm and suicidal feelings as well as a broad range of other factors and experiences clients bring to their sessions.

Hi, I'm looking forward to hearing from you! I want to hear your concerns and support you to work towards the things that are most important in your life. I feel that therapy should happen in a friendly, nurturing space in which you feel safe and comfortable to bring anything you want to talk about and work on. I usually suggest exercises and other resources to complete in between sessions in order to keep the work progressing.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
