Many people come to me feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or tired from masking, people‑pleasing, or holding everything together alone. Others describe the quiet exhaustion of being deeply feeling or highly sensitive. I bring both professional training and lived experience, offering a gentle, grounded space where you don’t have to minimise or hide parts of yourself. I support anxiety, low self‑esteem, masking, trauma, neurodivergence and feeling stuck. If things feel difficult, you’re welcome to get in touch.

Sometimes life can be overwhelming and during these times we may develop patterns, thoughts and behaviours that can become unhelpful or tough to challenge. Counselling and psychotherapy can help you explore and understand patterns that have emerged in your life and provides an opportunity to work through these. It can help to relieve pain, depression or anxiety, help you make decisions, make healthier choices, help you to work towards better relationships with those around you, or live a life according to what is important to you.

Life brings all sorts of challenges and some can be much harder to overcome than others. Most adults can remember a time when they were dealing with a situation so tough that everyday living became more challenging than usual. For children and young people, who have not had time to develop their own coping strategies, such situations are even more difficult to cope with. Many children who are having a difficult time do not know what it is that they are feeling and cannot put it into words. Counselling for children and young people might be slightly different to the traditional idea of therapy you may have in mind.

Hi there, and thank you for taking the time to view my profile. My name is Kathryn, and I am a clinical psychologist based in Lichfield. I have been working in the NHS since 2010, and during this time, I have had the privilege of being able to meet and work with so many different people, all with their own unique stories, and all needing help in some way. The work is never the same, but I hope that I am always able to make a difference to the lives of the people that I work with, and I always learn something from them too, which I am eternally grateful for.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
