I have worked with many clients in the NHS, creative industries, Olympic & Paralympic squads, professional golf, elite university sports , pro cycling & public sector organisations.
I work as a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapist. I support people in how to enhance levels of Self-Belief (confidence), resilience, motivation & how to manage performance anxiety, emotions & pressure. Pressure in life, as in high-demand or performance environments is a certainty & how we perceive pressure determines our response. We can choose how to think about pressure, but this depends on our Self-Belief, which is an essential ingredient when navigating demanding situations. In these environments we need access to skills to strengthen, maintain & take care of our mental fitness & mental health. Self-Belief is a trainable skill!

Aside from my work, I’m an avid sports fan.
Hi, I’m Ilan! I’m a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Director of The Oak Tree Practice. I want to tell you a bit more about myself, as I realise selecting a psychologist can be a tough task! I feel very privileged to be able to say I love what I do and always have, ever since I started volunteering for ChildLine in 2007. Following this, I’ve had experience working with a wide variety of clients including children, young people, adults, older adults, military personnel, individuals with learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurological conditions. I have also furthered my studies through the completion of undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. All this aside, one of the most important parts of my work is building relationships with those sitting opposite me. I have always believed that you can have all the training and knowledge in the world, but if the client doesn’t return, none of this can be put into action. Therefore, my first aim is always to provide a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental space where we can work on the clients’ difficulties together.

I have personal experience and have worked closely with adults in elite and high-pressure environments, including national sports teams.
I have experience working with adults, children, and family systems. When supporting adult clients, I use an integrative approach, ensuring the client's individual needs are fostered. Sessions will provide a comforting, supportive, and confidential space for clients to explore themselves, their thoughts, actions, and the relationships in their lives. An assessment will help decipher a client’s current difficulties, whether that be related to depression, anxiety, stress, traumatic experiences, bereavement, or another cause of discomfort. A plan will then be made as to how best to support you.

Do you ever spend time worrying about things you have said or done in a meeting? to a friend? to your boss? Do you ever get trapped in self-critical thinking - where after a mistake you constantly berate yourself? Do you ever wake up in the night or when your trying to something important and you can't control negative thoughts? Are you going through a period of transition and feeling stressed, confused or lost? I've always been fascinated by the power of the brain - how it can work for us and against us. With over 5 years of experience, I've witnessed first-hand how our mindset can either lift us up or hold us back.

Sports Performance Counsellors

How does sports psychology work?

Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualisation, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?

The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?

Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?

Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
