I have particular interest and experience in working with people wishing to consider matters of faith and spirituality as part of the therapeutic work.
I'm Marguerite, an integrative psychotherapist with over 12 years experience working with adults and young people. I offer a safe and supportive space for us to together explore whatever may be troubling you. We will reflect on how you manage the ups and downs of life and the difficulties you are facing right now. We will work at nourishing self care and I will provide support in your journey of really knowing and being yourself, being free.

I believe spirituality is an important aspect of our humanity and will work with clients to find their own understanding and expression of a rich and grounded spiritual life.
I work particularly with anxiety, depression, trauma and loss; loss of belonging and cultural identity as well as loss through bereavement including childhood bereavement. Influenced by the work of Carl Jung and by the writings of Annie Dillard, John O'Donohue and Richard Rohr among others, I make room for the soulful and the creative in my work. A qualified psychotherapist and psychotherapeutic counsellor, I am a member of UK Counsellors and Psychotherapists (UKCP) and registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I have Diplomas in Integrative Transpersonal Psychotherapy and Counselling.

Here are some of the issues I have helped clients explore: depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, loss, anger, family relationships, relationships with partners, self-harm, lack of self esteem, suicidal thoughts, health-related issues, self-development, creativity, mindfulness, spirituality , search for meaning.
If you decide to work with me it will be rather like setting out on a journey together. On that journey I’ll be your fellow traveller, companion and guide. Whether or not your reason for coming to see me is an external situation that’s impacting your life, a key part of our time together will be to explore your inner world. As we explore that world together you may develop greater insight into patterns of thought and behaviour that served you once but now limit you; you may find alternative ways of approaching difficulties; you may discover a way of being in the world that is more in tune with who you truly are.

Counselling can help with a variety of issues, some of the areas I work with are: anxiety, depression, stress management, bereavement, long term illness, relationship issues, spirituality and loss/change of identity.
I offer a non-judgemental, safe environment to help you understand yourself and your life. Counselling can support you to find your own insights, new ways of being with yourself and others, and work towards healing and freedom. It can be a space to get things off your chest, rest or reset, find perspective and understanding in life and relationships, as well as having someone to really hear and be with you as you share and explore what is difficult. My practice is informed by Buddhist philosophy and meditation, which I have been exploring and supporting others with for over 15 years, emphasising embodied awareness and compassion.

Spirituality Counsellors

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
