Psychoynamic,
somatic
, humanistic, transpersonal and existential (if these words mean anything to you!).
While you may be seeking therapy to help you out of a dark or difficult time- due to anxiety, depression, relationship issues, crisis of meaning, insomnia... therapy can be a powerful gift. We learn a great deal about ourselves and others- ultimately about living life with more ease and enjoyment. We'll get curious about what you learnt growing up: your world-view, your assumptions and even your bodily responses to situations that you face today. We'll see what has worked for you and what causes pain or limits you- to unblock and clear the path forward with compassion, kindness, insight, and even at times, a sense of humour.

I also have 20 years of meditation experience and therefore include mindfulness and
somatic

Do you experience anxiety, depression, grief, emptiness or anger? Do you feel alone or overwhelmed by these feelings ? Most people do and most people feel they have no other option but to stay feeling that way. The truth is that everyone will experience difficulties and difficult situations either in their personal or work life. Some are harder to deal with on your own. A friendly, experienced, listening ear can really make a positive difference to your life.

In my work as a Psychologist and Integrative Psychotherapist I bring together cognitive and
somatic
ways of working to provide effective treatment. I use a range of models, including psychodynamic and humanistic approaches, mindfulness, embodiment and movement psychotherapy. Sometimes the nature of our experience is far more complex than words can describe and this form of therapy encourages the individual to integrate what often is felt ineffably. By supporting the creative potential of each individual’s body-mind, healing begins.

use a
somatic
approach to address present concerns, supplementing it with CBT/ACT and mindfulness exercises.
My interest in psychotherapy, spirituality and meditation began after the end of my marriage several years ago, which like many other types of losses, triggered a lot of suffering. Life transition, family and friends losses, the breakup of long-term relationships, stress, anxiety and depression are all part of human suffering. However, we have an innate capability, which we can strengthen, that allows us to navigate and, more importantly, learn from our most difficult life experiences.

How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
