I began working in the helping professions since 2011, supporting people who struggled with mental health issues and addictions and later people with learning and disabilities.
Welcome and thank you for looking at my profile. Whether you are feeling depressed or anxious, stuck or confused, I can help you to have a better understanding of yourself so you can begin to consider and perhaps make different choices. In my approach we explore your past and present relationships with people to have a better understanding of what is affecting you. I provide a safe and confidential space where you can talk about your problems. I can help you to gain a different perspective on yourself, which in turn can help you to arrive at your own decisions and conclusions with more clarity and confidence.

I have substantial experience working with teenagers and young adults, including those with learning difficulties.
I have trained in existential psychotherapy, and I apply this in my work with clients. The starting point is the experience of the client, to provide the opportunity for them to examine their understanding of life, and the problems and dilemmas they face; to reassess their goals and desires. It provides an opportunity to consider how their choices have been constrained, perhaps by the views and expectations of others, but also by constraints rooted in our society. Understanding can lead to questioning, and growth, possibly in new directions.

I am excited by the new discoveries in neuroscience and my work can take on more of a coaching style, where we discover together the things that have been holding you back from living the life you want to live, discovering how old habitual patterns keep you doing the same old things, and learning new ways to create a new future for yourself.
Hello; a warm welcome to my profile. Perhaps you are trying to change something in your life; perhaps you are wanting to give up old habits or create new ones. Maybe you are struggling with something, or perhaps you just want to take a look at your life and assess or reassess it. Together we can work out a way forward; by looking at and following your cues, which you may or may not be aware of right now, we can map a path that feels right for you. I truly believe that everyone carries their own answers within them; we just need to find out what they are!

Hi, I’m Ilan! I’m a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Director of The Oak Tree Practice. I want to tell you a bit more about myself, as I realise selecting a psychologist can be a tough task! I feel very privileged to be able to say I love what I do and always have, ever since I started volunteering for ChildLine in 2007. Following this, I’ve had experience working with a wide variety of clients including children, young people, adults, older adults, military personnel, individuals with learning disabilities, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurological conditions. I have also furthered my studies through the completion of undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. All this aside, one of the most important parts of my work is building relationships with those sitting opposite me. I have always believed that you can have all the training and knowledge in the world, but if the client doesn’t return, none of this can be put into action. Therefore, my first aim is always to provide a warm, compassionate and non-judgmental space where we can work on the clients’ difficulties together.

Do you find yourself prioritising the external world and the needs of those around you? Perhaps you feel different to others or misunderstood in relationships? It may be you experience self-doubt, negative thinking or notice yourself repeating patterns that impact your relationships. Whatever is going on for you working together, relationally we can begin to explore ‘YOU’, to focus on raising your awareness & understanding of the way you experience yourself, to identify your goals for therapy, to be open to learning new ways of being. Therapy is a commitment between client & therapist, to be open to wanting things to be different.

I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents who face emotional, behavioural, and learning challenges that require support on their emotional well-being journey.
Reaching out for support on mental health and emotional well-being issues for your child or teenager may feel like a daunting experience. In the same way, being a young adult and searching for the right mental health professional to share your feelings and concerns with, feels difficult as well. However, it is the right choice. We can work together in a way that best suits you or your child’s needs and create a safe space for self-reflection and self-discovery. I am a fully qualified integrative child and adolescent counsellor for children and young people and a qualified primary teacher.

I am also a life-long carer with a special interest in family dynamics, as well as learning disabilities.
My focus is clients who see themselves as Carers, to another person, people or group - whose quality of daily life is in part or whole, is largely dependent on the care provided. My clients have lost the ability to see themselves as separate from their caring, or to put their own needs first. Life has has become blurred-like trying to see in a fogged-up mirror. Often clients want to 'just' unburden, tentatively trying out the novel feeling of hearing their own voice, exhausted, angry, overlooked and ironically, not well cared for themselves, very often managing their own

I have also worked in specialist services for people with physical health difficulties, learning disabilities, and family support.
Seeking therapy can be a difficult decision and often takes a great deal of courage. I believe therapy can benefit many aspects of our lives through discovering new perspectives and possibilities. In our meetings, I hope to create a collaborative relationship where we can engage in genuine, open and honest dialogue so that new meanings about your life and relationships can emerge. This will include a warm, compassionate and curious stance towards the concerns you bring. I offer a therapeutic style that encourages continuous feedback to ensure we are both working towards the same aim, and can adjust my approach to best support you.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
