Welcome, my name is Jo. If you're needing a objective space in your life, where your wellbeing is the focus, you may consider working with me. You can start at the beginning, middle or end, there is no set way and there's no pressure either. Life, relationships, the past, present or the future can bring many forms of anxiety, worry, stress and impacts. This can show up and manifest in a multitude of ways; maybe leaving you feeling out of sorts. If we are a good fit, you'll feel a genuineness and acceptance that will be the foundation for your sessions.

I am a Clinical Psychologist specialising in supporting children, adolescents, and families where emotional wellbeing and physical health intersect. I work with anxiety, low mood, stress, and adjustment to medical diagnoses, with particular expertise in digestive/GI conditions, oncology, and health-related anxiety. I currently work in a specialist NHS hospital in London, supporting young people and families facing complex health challenges. I understand how distressing it can be when symptoms persist, medical investigations continue, or daily life becomes shaped by worry about the body.

I have slots available for personal therapy. Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons. I believe that the greatest benefit of Psychosynthesis comes to a strong willed psychologically minded person who seeks personal growth, self-knowledge and integration of the creative and rational sides. Such a person is ready for self-reflection, working with subconscious processes and integrating logical and intuitive thinking to achieve greater harmony and fulfil their potential. People I am working with are open to an in-depth exploration and seeking to understand their 'true self'.

I am a BACP-registered integrative counsellor with extensive experience of working alongside clients as they make sense of their inner world. My work focuses on helping you explore your emotional world, and to uncover how early life patterns may inform your current ways of being. I draw upon various schools of thought but I am especially informed by psychodynamic, person-centred, attachment-based and somatic theories. I work inter-culturally, and my own experience in therapy allowed me to explore how cultural and societal influences come to shape our sense of self.

Having lived in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, USA, France and the UK, I work with your cultural, social and spiritual uniqueness. We build a relationship first, then work together to understand what your emotions are communicating, recognise patterns of behaviour that no longer serve you and make more informed, intuitive choices. In the process, I aim to re-establish broken connections between mind, body and spirit. I strive to practice with a decolonised approach, acknowledging intersectional complexities, i.e. systems of oppression, neurodiversity, GSRD (gender, sexual, and relationship diversity). I am committed to continued learning.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, low self-esteem, or the weight of cultural, family, or faith expectations, you’re not alone. I work with people from many different backgrounds who often feel caught between who they are and who they’ve been taught to be. You might be wanting more confidence, more clarity, and more space to be yourself. If that resonates, this could be a supportive space for you.

As a Muslim, you do not need to explain your values or cultural context to me; God willing I already understand them.
Lead Therapist for Tasfiyah Therapy, merging Clinical Science w/ Islamic Theology, Jurisprudence & Spiritual Wellbeing. Struggling to reconcile mental health with faith? You may be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, trapped in a cycle of intrusive thoughts (OCD), or facing conflict in your marriage. Often, Muslims feel they must choose between a "clinical" approach that ignores the soul, or a "spiritual" approach that ignores the science. You do not have to choose. Through Tasfiyah Therapy, we bridge that gap. We help those who need evidence-based clinical care that respects their Theology, Jurisprudence, and Spiritual Wellbeing.

Muslim Counsellors

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognise an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
