I have 8 years experience working with a wide range of issues including depression, disassociation and addiction. As a member of the LGBT+ community I understand issues around minority stress, trauma, coming out, isolation and belonging.

I am very mindful of how difficult finding a therapist that you feel comfortable with can be and I offer a calm and compassionate approach, while we gain an understanding of your concerns. My primary therapeutic method is ‘psychodynamic’ but I draw on a variety of ‘models’ to help in whichever way is appropriate: These may include CBT or
EFT
. Once we have revealed, talked-through and understood the root causes of your concerns we can examine ways of dealing with the issues and moving forward. This is a very much a joint effort where we work together to help you through the troublesome episode and out the other side.

The therapists in our relationship counselling service have been trained in
Emotionally Focused
Therapy (
EFT
) and often have additional psychology or counselling qualifications.
Claremont’s Relationship Counselling is set up to serve couples and those in relationship. We focus on understanding how life is experienced and understood by clients and we help people to raise their awareness of their experiences, and to explore and reflect on them. From reflection and awareness come new perspectives, understandings, feelings, and choices. The aim of our relationship counselling service is to create a better understanding of how problems arise and cycle within one’s relationships, with the overall goal of helping couples to increase feelings of security, connection, and closeness within the relationship.

I’m also trained in
Emotionally Focused
Therapy for Couples (
EFT
).
Hello and welcome. I’m here to help you find the inner strengths you need to unblock what’s troubling you and move on with your life. My clients tell me I’m warm, kind and insightful – which is good, because my main aim is to offer a safe, welcoming place where you feel willing and able to consider making changes. Most of us aren’t used to reaching out for professional support. We’re brought up to think asking for help can be a sign of weakness. But whatever you’re facing, working together with a professional therapist can let you see a way forward.

In my work I use an integrative approach, drawing from
emotionally focused
, person-centred and narrative perspectives.
I am a UKCP accredited psychotherapist working with individuals, couples and families. I currently work remotely via telephone or online video call. In my work I have found that people seek therapy for lots of different reasons during different points in their lives – you may be struggling with depression, relationship problems, a recent loss, low self-esteem, feeling anxious or stressed, or processing past hurts and trauma. You may not even know what brings you to therapy, but just have a feeling of being stuck and wanting to feel differently. These are all issues that we might explore together in therapy.

Emotionally Focused Counsellors
Who is emotionally focused therapy for?
Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.
Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?
People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.
What happens in emotionally focused therapy?
Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.
What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?
EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
